In my fantasy we could all have our separate living quarters, and share the cost of a housekeeper, cook, and even nurse/butt wipe technician if needed. We could have dinners and movie nights, and play cards or whatever. I hope to learn a musical instrument with all my non-childraising time, so we could jam. Maybe we can stay in touch till then!

Only thing, I love animals, but couldn't handle living somewhere that smelled like cat pee. You cat ladies are going to have to stay up on that.

Wow what a great idea smile My husband and I would love to do something like that when we are older. I really thiink there will be the need for such arrangements by then as more and more people are joining the cf ranks.

I have always seen myself in retirement in a two seater convertible sport car with a tag that says NOTAMOM!!!

I will be a hip old lady. I want to spend what would have been my childs education on fun things in retirement.

frieda and myrabeth, i am looking you guys up in 30 years to join my "retirement" home. I will promise to clean up after my cats, since I will likely have several. And if one you has a dog, I would love to take it for long walks smile

Yay! Talking about this is actually making me not dread old age so much. I was joking about the cat clean up, just so ya know. We can have the cleaning person do that. I definitely hope to have at least one dog and cat till I die if at all possible.

That's funny! Since my parents don't have any grandkids to squander money on, they each have a two-seater sports car (Dad's is the convertible)! LOL! They are hip "senior citizens"! They're not rich or anything, they just saved well for retirement and are deservedly enjoying it. They travel quite a bit and do lots of fun things, and stay busy with their own activities rather than relying on me to take care of them. I can't imagine them being "old fogey" retired people who never go anywhere and sit around in recliners watching soap operas. LOL!

I want to be like your parents Cindy! I plan to do a ton of hiking and writing. And traveling, if I have not gotten it out of my system by then!

A while back I read an interesting article in U.S. News & World report about a group of senior citizens in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston who pooled their resources and organized their own retirement community. This arrangement allowed them to share the cost of elder care services while staying in their own homes, and continuing to live their "hip senior lifestyle". The idea has been so successful that it's been replicated in other cities around the country. The organization's website is beaconhillvillage.org. Seems like a more viable solution than having kids to take care of you when you're old.:)

Ha, this is great! We'll have some cats in the Childfree Coot Commune, share the costs of cleaning and healthcare and cooking... and get some attractive construction workers (you know, to put in handrails and stuff) and nurses to watch at work. Gotta have entertainment, after all. wink

No, in all seriousness, I am really hoping for this sort of thing when I'm older. As we've all discussed before, even if you *have* kids they're not guaranteed to take care of you at all, much less in the way you'd like to be taken care of. Better to make your own plans.

I'm all about a CF Coot Commune! Just as long as I can at least have a horse or pony to pat. Maybe a miniature horse!

I do already invest in the money market so my retirement $$ will be there for me when I'm ready. I don't need kids to rely on to take care of me. I'm all about taking the path of my mom, who has a sports car, nice condo, a devoted siamese cat, a Harley, and takes frequent vacations to the coast and casinos. She's one hard-working lady so she deserves it all. Hope she can have that till her last day on Earth!
