The 2007-2008 Educational Testing Service (ETS) Fellowship and Internship Programs in Research and Development.

These programs are designed to promote quality and distinction in educational measurement and related fields as well as to encourage original and significant research for scholars and graduate students. The goal of the programs is to provide talented individuals, especially women and underrepresented minority scholars and students, opportunities to carry out research under the mentorship of ETS senior research scientists and psychometricians.

The ETS Fellowship and Internship programs seek scholars who either hold a doctoral degree or who are enrolled in a doctoral program in the field of educational research and who are interested in research opportunities. I would like to solicit your help in getting this information out to your colleagues and your very best graduate students and alumni/ae. I encourage you and your colleagues to identify the strong candidates at your institution as well as your outstanding alumni/ae and ask them to apply.

The summer internship program has been redesigned slightly with a focus on major research activities that will occur in 2007. ETS is seeking students to participate in a wide range of areas of interest that reflect the ever-broadening role of educational measurement. Graduate students from a diverse range of disciplinary perspectives are invited to apply for the program, including those with backgrounds in statistics, psychometrics, cognitive science, learning sciences, psychology, teaching and classroom research, linguistics, policy research, and specific content areas such as mathematics and reading. Selected interns conduct research under the guidance of ETS mentors in Princeton, N.J. Graduate students who are currently enrolled in a full-time doctoral program and who have completed a minimum of two years of coursework toward their PhD or EdD prior to the program start date are eligible to apply.

The Harold Gulliksen psychometric research program seeks graduate students who have completed their doctoral coursework and are at the dissertation stage of their program. Selected fellows will study at their universities and participate in a research project under the supervision of an academic mentor and in consultation with an ETS scientist. The goal of this program is to increase the number of well-trained scientists in educational measurement, including psychometrics, cognitive science, natural language processing and disciplines of quantitative inquiry.

The postdoctoral fellowship programs provide independent research opportunities to individuals who hold a doctorate in a relevant discipline such as minority issues, psychometrics, literacy, education, teaching, psychology, and statistics. ETSs Sylvia Taylor Johnson Minority Fellowship in Educational Measurement is among this group of programs, which are designed to promote excellence, as well as to encourage original and significant research for early-career and seasoned scholars. These programs provide talented scholars an opportunity to carry out independent research under the mentorship of ETS senior researchers. Studies focused on issues facing minority students are especially encouraged.

Please take a moment to consider which qualified individuals you believe would benefit from this opportunity and help ETS achieve the program's goal. Attached is a general announcement for the programs for you to share and/or post at your institution.

The application process will open on November 1, 2006. At that time, information and application instructions will be posted on the ETS Web site at www.ets.org/research/fellowships.html . The deadline for applying is February 1, 2007.

If you have any questions about the program, please write to internfellowships@ets.org.
