Out of your fridge??? Is that bottled water? Hope you let it warm up a bit before you use it! (heehee)

I also just found out about new tank syndrom and I now fully understand about tank cycling. Considering i recieved my fish for my birthday without any clue of what i was getting, I was not prepared for my fish and added them to my tank after only 24 hours. Keeping this in mind, i was wondering if anybody knew a good way to prevent New Tank Syndrom?

I also forgot to ask how often should i do water changes? I have been doing them every other day for a gallon tank. I only change about 25% at a time, but I think that i might change to 50 % water changes bacause there is a possibility that one of my fish has ick. If anybody could could tell me what I should do, I would appreciate it.

I was also wondering if anybody would recommend Kordon Amquel+ or Freeze-Dried Plankton? I know about bloodworms, but I wasn't sure about plankton.

For a 1 gal tank I would change 50 % every 3 days or so....You do not even have to worry about or deal with tank cycling IF you do not use a filter AND you do this type of water change. Do you have them each in their own 1 gal tak, or is it one of those 1 gal with a divider. If it is a divided tank and 1 has ick then they both have it. If I suspected ick I would use the quick cure that has a dosage of 1 drop per gallon, have used it in the past and it works well for me. Hope that helps you out some.

Hey!! I think Opal has dropsy!! eek

This is very interesting..I thought she was just filling up with eggs as I had one of the male fry in a tank next to her...but...I just pointed a flashlight at her to check it out because she is getting SO incredibly huge around the belly that it's beginning to look unhealthy.
Well, she is full of fluid..I can see clear through her when I shine the light on her..only a very few eggs in there. Funny, because she is very healthy looking except for her ample belly..and she is still very pretty.
Oh well, just play it out and see what happens. I don't think there is any specific treatment for it and she doesn't seem to be suffering any..in fact, she looks to be thriving if her activity and coloring are any indication. I took a few pics of her condition. I hope at least one of them turns out well. I'll post it so you can see what I mean.
There are 2 pics of her that I posted last week which just came up at 'rate a fish'..but those two don't show very well how really large she has become.
Wow, wonder how this will turn out....I'll let ya know.

I wonder with sick fish if it would be better to remove as much light as we can so that they could rest more. When we are sick we need more rest. Maybe it would be better for them also. Putting a brown paper bag over their bowl or something simular. Jill what is your opinion? I have a betta with fin rot now. I believe it started because I moved him away from the female he was shelfed bedside. He became very lethargic the day after I moved him and fin rot set in a few days later. He did not perk back up even with medicine (tetracycline and fungus clear) until I moved the female back beside him. I know this sounds odd but I spend alot of time observing them and I am tuned into their moods. She did not seem quite as distressed as he was so I assume she had enough attention from the male on the other side of her to keep her entertained. Now that the betta with the rot has his girl back he is blowing huge bubble nests and the rot is starting to heal. It was not just any rot either. It was the quick rot that destroys fins rapidly. I moved him because I wanted to put a few other bettas on the back of my headboard and he fit better on the opposite side. I think from now I on I will leave them beside the neighbor they have become accustomed to. I am thinking about covering the majority of his bowl with a paper bag and leaving just enough of an opening for him to still keep his eye on her. I would really like your opinions on light verse darkness when bettas are sick. Thanks in advance.
By the way I think your idea for this running fish journal is an excellent idea. Thanks. I hope to learn a lot from reading others posts.

I think anything you do for your fish which keeps them active and swimming, is a good thing. When they sulk on the bottom of the tank then they are basically swimming in thier own swill. Not a good thing and can only lead to trouble. Poor little guys, they're so sensitive!
