I just wanted to comment on what aredant said earlier about Jesus.

aredant said,
Quote:
As for Jesus? Jesus is a mythological figure - the man mentioned in the bible never existed.

I would like to say that we do all have a freedom of speech but that doesn't mean that we have to deny history. aredant is saying, christians are bad, they hurt people, they burned witches and all that stuff. Well what if I said that christians didn't burn the witches and didn't do anything of the sort that atheists are claiming. I mean if you deny history then why can't I? Now thinking about it as a reasonable person, ya the witch trials did happen and ya the crusaders did exist but then Jesus existed too. I don't see any bases for aredant's denial of Jesus. It is just a bunch of speculations from aredant when aredant claims that "Jesus didn't exist".

I never come in here. But I always have some people who come into my forum and spout off about the validity of Christianity.

I think it's just asking for a fight to enter a domain where there are non believers and become a nemesis.
HOWEVER...
The very essence of Christians is vile to those who have decided that they know more than God. We don't even have to say a thing for those who are in the darkness to cry out "foul!" when we are around.

I think that Christians should start speaking up and using the freedoms they have to speak out against those hwo are denying us the very right to follow what we want to. I don't care whose feelings get hurt in the process, I believe what I believe and that's that.

I'm not against Atheism, I just think it's strange to believe in nothing.

Once, after posting an article about Halloween, I was contacted by someone from the church of Satan. He told me that the essence of that church was that man only believes in man. Nothing else. There is no after life, no spirit world, nothing. He said that the Satanists worship themselves.

So I guess if all you believe in is yourself as an atheist, then that's not much different than a Satanist. There's just got to be a better definition of Atheism than believing in nothing...

And why deny those who have hope the right to have and speak about it? That doesn't make sense either. But, like I said I don't come in here....

BiblBasixEditor,
I'm sorry, but comparing atheists with Satanists just shows how "open" you christians really are towards other people. It hasn't been any different then when I first encountered christians. You don't care about other people either, christians do think about themselves only as well.
So, if I have to follow your own (wrong) analogy, that makes you a satanist as well.

I practise reiki BTW, I respect people, whatever their religions is. But don't try to force me into your religion (like I experienced lots of christians doing towards me from when I was only a little kid) when I don't force you into mine.

Guess what? I give massages and reiki. More info here!

I don't believe the issue is about speaking out. In this country you are free to practice your religion, BUT - and here's where folks tend to get off-track- you may NOT impinge upon my right to practice my religion or lack thereof. This includes making laws based on YOUR beliefs, forcing people to work in hostile work environments (yes, preaching to me all day long in the next cubicle is hostile), or knocking on my door "spreading the word" (I mean really, how many people on this entire planet have not had the dubious honor of hearing THE WORD yet?!?!).

Frankly it's a shame I can't have a conversation online without having to "debate" beliefs or lack thereof. With the attitudes online and the constant smugness I really have to say I would probably deny God's existence even if he showed up at my front door because there is no way I want to spend an eternity with the so-called religous people I've encountered! That truly would be hell for me.

You make me laugh, Denise.
I was thinking about these things the other day.
It's another misconception I see that some believers think atheists are pounding away for an atheistic government.
Speaking for myself, I only want a nontheistic one. I don't want it to advocate atheism, either. Government should stay out of the question altogether. And it should stay out of government.

Isa123,

Your right, it is only an analogy and in no way meant to bring others up in arms.... there are alot of very well educated and intelligent Satanists out there who feel very strongly about their own set of beliefs. I'm not trouncing on anyones beliefs as much as asking the questin "What IS atheism?"

"With the attitudes online and the constant smugness I really have to say I would probably deny God's existence even if he showed up at my front door because there is no way I want to spend an eternity with the so-called religous people I've encountered!"

DeniseExoticPets,

I don't want to spend eternity with those folks either!! You think people like that judge non-christians! Imagine how they judge those of us who don't follow all their rules!! And your right also about not impinging on anothers right to practice whatever rligion they choose to follow. But, What is Atheism? It's not a religion becasue there is no religious undertones... how is one supposed to enter into a debate about religious points of view when the person we are debating with has none? Unless, that person is simply attacking my personal choice to have a belief in something other than myself...a greater power so to speak...

Jenna,

I read your article which is along these lines, and I'm still confused... as an atheist, what is it you believe in? If it's not the belief in the here and now or the power of man soley based on our own judgement and power, then what is it? If it's the belief in science and intellect, where do you attribute the credit for such intellect? Is this something that only some are born with (the capability to think and reason) or is it something all people can develope but only some acheive? I guess what I'm asking is this:

"Is our ability to think and reason and create only our own? Is it something we develope under our own power? Or is it some gift given to us to develope and nurture to become all that we are meant to become in some grand order designed by someone greater than ourselves? (God) A gift we are to be thankful for?"

PS:

I have no faith in government... it's just a way for the rich to get richer and to sway public opinion. Robbing Peter to Pay Paul....

Well After reading some of these posts here, I can see that most of the atheists, who claim to be tolarant, are saying that Christians are dumb, intolarant and rotten eggs(or something). I mean if you guys think that christians are all cheater, who beat up their wives, stupids that have no idea that there can't be a God, or don't believe in science and etc

I saw no such statements addressed to Christians. This is part of my problem, you see what you want to see, even if it just ain't there.

Quote:
I believe there is good evidance that there is a God based on these arguements. Please tell me if I am wrong. If there is no God, then you either believe that we came from nothing or the universe is infinate in time. I mean it is eternal but I see no logic or science or even common sense in believing that we came from nothing. If you think we came from nothing please tell me why you believe so because I really want to know.

You believe we were created by "God" simply because some man-written book states so? I believe science at least has a little more substance than that.

Quote:
Any religion that says it is the only truth, or the only way to eternal life, is intolerent. Further more, I'd say it is FAR from the truth!

Touche' Patience, touche'. wink

Quote:
I would have to disagree with you on that one. Just calling people doesn't mean they are intolerent but you would actually have to be intolarant yourself to call others intolarant because if you were tolarant, you would tolarate other people for being intolarant. Also Truth by defination is in tolarant. So let's not be intolarant but deal with what they claim rather than calling them intolarnt and ourselves tolarant.

10 versions of the word "tolerant" in that 1 paragraph. Me thinks the lady doth protest too much.

Quote:
I am a Christian, I feel very sorry for those who are not

How utterly and shamefully arrogant.

Now, all that said I'm on the fence on the whole issue. For years my heart has wanted to believe, but my logical mind will have no part of it.

Jenna R, it seems your confusion is over the word "belief". Atheists DON'T believe. So it's not a question of what atheists believe in at all. As you are a person who does have beliefs, I think this is what you find difficult to understand. Atheists take what they know to be true and make plans and assumptions based on that knowledge. No faith, no belief.
