So far here in my area, the craft and fabric department has not changed at all. That's not to say it won't. There are some things I don't like about walmart, but I wouldnt go so far as to say they are a "blight" on American commerce, that's a bit strong. Especially when there are definatly "bigger fish to fry" here, problems of a much much grander scale. Overall, when I weigh it all out, I like Walmart. As I said, I have a few problems with them, but the good out weighs the bad. On another note, I was completely unaware that Walmart had opened stores in the UK..When did that happen?

I am tired of people putting down Walmart they employ a lot of people in fact I have friends who work there. They are no different in how they handle things than most retailers. They take a lot of flack because they are so big I have wondered if a lot of the information that comes out is planted by another organization or something, maybe a union? I don't know but I love Walmart and all of the discount stores even the Dollar stores.

I agree that I have not met a rude Walmart employee anywhere, and we travel all over. If I need help and ask, they either tell you where to look, lead you to it, or ask some one else that might know. I really appreciate that. The downside is that the management keep shrinking the craft department. Now I have been told by several Walmart people that most stores are going to stop carrying material and replace it with party favors! Yuk!

I totally agree about putting down walmart. I love walmart. On the downside, in smaller towns they do cause a dwindling in "mom-and-pop" stores because they just can not compete with walmart prices, its just a sad fact that has nothing to do with conspiracy theories. There have been cases where small, family owned businesses that have been open for decades, have had to shut down when Walmart came to town. I love walmart, like I said, but there are plus's and minuses. As for rude walmart employee's, well, you've just not been to all of them yet. I've had a couple of altercations, and both of them were with the same employee. Some one who wanted a paycheck, not a job. Too lazy to do her job, and too rude and self absorbed to care. But that is only two episodes out of the hundreds and hundreds of times I've shopped at walmart. Rude employees are definatly rare, but they do happen.
On a happy note, while at walmart Friday night, I asked the sales person in the craft/fabric department if they too were shutting down (since as I said above, I've seen no change here at my local store), and she said "as of right now, No, we are not closing it or changing it". So (fingers crossed) maybe I'll be one of the lucky ones.

Hey Glenda, come on down to the Wal*Mart in Union City, GA 30291 and pay your good, hard-earned money over to a sullen employee who doesn't even have the courtesy to say "thank you" when you handover said money. You may travel all over, but you missed this city . . .

Well if they do away with the fabric dept. around where I'm at it'll be my husband who would be more put out b/c we would have to go 30-45 minutes to buy yardage and it wouldn't be as cheap.

Walmart is indeed dispensing with the cut fabric departments. When I first heard I wrote to the company and asked why. They didn't say why, but did confirm they were doing it. As to the crafts departments:

Some old walmart stores are being inhabited by Hobby Lobby stores. They have bolt fabrics and cut fabrics and yarn departments. Most of the yarns are high dollar, but they frequently run sales that are really sales.

Rude Employees at Walmart stores: I wrote the main headquarters complaining about some of the very rude employees in our local store. The manager of the local store phoned me (long distance) and asked for the details. My daughter said the employees are no longer with the store. I still will not purchase anything in that store.

I do not want to buy cut fabrics! When I purchase yard goods I usually purchase the whole bolt. I do not want little dabs of fabric such as 2 to 5 yard pieces. I do some Civil War re-enactment sewing and a dab of fabric in that case doesn't even make a pair of "draws" let alone a 9 yard skirt.

Just to throw in my two cents...

A nearby town had a Wal-Mart move in a few years ago. Over time all of the similar "mom and pop" stores closed up. THEN Wal-Mart picked up and left town! Now those folks have to travel quite a distance for the things that were once easy to find. I like Wal-Mart but I wish they would use their hearts just a little instead of just focusing on the $$$.

They tried to put a second WalMart in a near by community and it was not allowed by the city. JoAnne's closed because of WalMart. I can never find an employee in WalMart, aside from the check out person, some who are less than capable of doing just that. WalMart camping makes me smile! That is so funny, I get it, but it's still funny.

At the risk of beating on a horse that is most certaintly already dead smile Walmart isn't the only place you can encounter rude employee's. Sadly, we must constantly deal with people who have appaling behavior and attitudes, from resturants to clothing stores, to markets, and even schools. IMHO, its up to us to be the "bigger better" person when we have to deal with these folks, as hard as it may be to do so.
