Emg,
I thought you were talking about the metaphorical violin to mourn the loss of your ADF. Then I read the next sentence about the recital. :music: Oh, ok, she really plays the violin

Ok, so it won't let me delete the duplicate message. My niece and two nephews all play violin, and are majoring in it in college. Nan

LOL Well I do hope your violin prctice and recital go well. After reading your post I don't think i'm gonna try the breeding thing even though i really am curious and think the pair I have in mind would have gorgeous offspring. I have a life outside of fish too and it just sounds way too busy for whaat I want to deal with. I have 4 aquariums and 6 betta tanks and adf 5 gal set up and a little betta hex with shrimp ghost decided not to let them just be sitting targets anymore the frogs were getting good but they only caught them and killed them they didn't eat them...what's the point not gonna do that. I am fascinated with them and want to just kinda see what happens in this little betta hex. Glo

Lol...well, I don't know if I would call what I do with a violin..actually PLAYING it...more like an "attempt" to play it... But who knows...one day I might actually enjoy hearing myself play!
Yeah...I guess my fish do take up a bit more of my time than they should...but they don't have to. I can get what I have to get done with them in about...half hour a day for feeding..(all those little bitties in all those little cups!)..I could probably get all the tanks cleaned in an hour and a half a week..(usually do it on the weekend)..but, I dawdle at it, take my time...clean a couple of tanks then go do something else or just watch them swim for a bit, trying to pick out a good match for that orange one..still can't decide..no one else is orange!
Anyway, in between taking care of fish and practicing violin...I find time for my family oO(does that sound backwards??)
Emg

I had an attempted suicide with one of my fry the other day. Went to check out the ones in the cups on the dining room table...saw something I thought was a piece of a plant between two of the cups...turned out it was one of my fry ! I thought at first it was a goner...but then it gasped! Jeesh...now, I don't know what ever possessed me..with all the fry I have...but, I went and put it back in the cup and actually did my best to SAVE it !! And....sadly, I succeeded! Lol...it's a bit ragged looking but swimming happily now after a 2 day recovery. Thought for sure it wouldn't make it...(dang, better luck next time!) Emg :rolling:

Emg, you're funny. too 'bad' you saved him, eh? anyway, glad jax is doing better, but it sounds like your sick bay is full these days!
As long a labyrinth (air-breather) fish isn't dried out, he won't die. So lots of times fish can be on the floor for hours and recover. Silly fishies.
BTW, if you sent out your fish via overnight mail, I doubt you would need heat packs for this time of year. When they are off the brine shrimp, they will be ready to go for those who want them.

The overnight mail would most likely work Jilly...but I wonder who would want to pay the cost for a $2.00 pet quality fish....The fry I have are really nothing to oooohh and ahhh over..the colors aren't as vibrant as what you find..even in WALMART! (GASP) Well, except for the orange guy/gal and that ones mine! Sadly for him/her I think I might have overfed at that crucial time when the swim bladder is developing. He's healthy enough but swims slightly hunched up like the few belly scrapers I ended up with. I went by advice taken from many different web pages on breeding betta and raising fry. Some said feed 3 times a day..others 2 times...and one fella who has been breeding betta for 40 years told me he only feeds his once a day...(should have asked him FIRST, but only found him after the fact.. ) Ah well, live and learn. I think I could still breed him as the issue is one related to feeding, and not genetics. I think that is what is wrong with "Patriot" (diagnosis...poorly developed swim bladder from early overfeeding) Next time around..(if there IS a next time)..I'll be more careful about that. Oh yeah..about my sick bay being full.....I think what did it was that I did major cleanings in some of the tanks...taking out all the water and scrubbing the algae out. Guess some of them just didn't like the drastic water change, even though I did the float for awhile add a bit of water process...oh well...
F'lar has something on him can't tell if it's fungus or ick...so I'm treating him for both.

I would still breed orange, you are right, the genes are fine. I would do everything I could to start an orange line - those are really hard to find. Maybe breed him with a yellow girl, or white girl. not red or blues. black would be okay, i think. green? Not sure, there.
what are your thoughts about moving your fry to new homes?

actually, the best way to get more orange is probably breeding him with a sister from the same batch that the gene is hiding in. I guess pick the lightest colored sister you have.
