I know in lots of areas kids don't trick-or-treat anymore, but where I live in New England, they do. Before we were married, my husband would come to my house while I gave out candy and leave his house in darkness. Before we met, he'd work late or go to a bookstore rather than go home. Now, we're both in his house. He thought I'd be giving out the candy like I did at my house, but I'm thinking the kids in this neighborhood never got any candy at this house, so why start now? I hate it when parents dress up their infants and go around collecting candy. I know the kids aren't eating it. Then there's the teenagers who are too old to be trick-or-treating who thrust pillowcases at you to fill up when you answer the door. I've decided I hate Halloween and adults shouldn't feel bullied into giving kids candy simply because something might happen to their property otherwise, so I think DH and I will go out for a nice dinner and stay out late that night.

I'm wondering if others avoid this "holiday" as well, or do you enjoy it?

OMG, I love Halloween -- and for all the things you list for not liking it. Isn't that funny? I love seeing all the kids in their costumes, esp. the ones that the parents have hand made (I remember my mom doing that for us). We live on a dead-end, so we don't get a lot of kids, mostly just the ones who know the kids on the street. But even so. And I always make a big pot of chili and my mom comes over to help pass out candy (always Smarties), and my brother and his family come over after the candy is done. We've been doing it forever -- since we got too old to collect candy ourselves.

One of DH's and my first "dates" was passing out candy for trick or treat. We lived in the same apt. complex, so I went over to his apt. We had a big bowl of candy, the first kid came to the door and we gave him a couple pieces. Well, turns out he was the ONLY kid who came!! And here we were worried about having *enough* candy!

I hate Halloween too...my fiance loves it, because he gets to dress up at work. But I know what you mean. I hate seeing kids in costumes (seeing kids at all, actually), I hate the teenagers also who are too old (although I'm a teenager, I stopped when I was 12). I also hate how parents give their kids some if not all the candy, and then when their kids get fat, they wonder why. The whole holiday just is a sucky one. It's stupid. I'm glad no kids come up to our house, because we're at the top of a hill...I'd turn off the light as soon as they made it here.

we usually give out candy.

this year, we're dressing the dog up like a fire hydrant and will sit on the front porch with him and hand out dum dums and smarties (i love putting those 2 candies together, lol). since we have a rottweiler, i have a feeling a lot of parents will avoid our porch. we're going to put the muzzle on the dog just to be extra cautious (and because he becomes more docile than a sleeping cat with it on).

when i was a kid, we were never allowed to participate in halloween trick-or-treating. my grandfather had a lot of pride and said it was begging. he refused to let anyone think his family needed to beg for anything. back then, i thought he was being really silly, but now after learning more about his childhood and early adult years, i understand better why he felt this way.

I HATE halloween! Every year, i keep the house in darkness and don't answer the door.... Ugh, all those stupid doting parents ferrying their kids around from door to door. I don't even know these people, or their kids!

I love halloween. It's one of the few times of the year when I can tolerate children.

Children in my neighborhood don't go trick-or-treating around here, probably because it's an apartment building.

Most years, I either volunteer at a local Halloween festival, or go to my mom's house to help her hand out candy. We always try to get good candy, decorate the house with all the seasonal frills, and I even try to compliment kids on their costumes.

Teenagers trick-or-treating doesn't bother me, mainly because I did it. I trick-or-treated until I was WAY too old!

And when all the trick-or-treaters are done with, I might join my sister for a while at the Ouija board, or if the weather is okay, we might hang around a cemetary for a while!

I love the idea of dressing up your dog for halloween. That is just too funny. My best friend dressed up her Jack Russel Terrier as the phantom of the opera one year...the markings on his face looked like a mask already. She had a hard time getting him to wear the cape!!

I love, love, love, love halloween. The thought of a scary, creepy, death/monster/ghost oriented holiday being accepted by young and old alike is just thrilling to me. Then again, every day is halloween in my life....

I LOVE Halloween too! I think it's because I have such fond memories of trick or treating with friends and cousins. In MA (where I'm originally from) I was sad last year because we only had 2 or 3 kids... sat on our stoop with a bowl of candy, just waiting.

Well we moved to IL and here it is a big deal! Everyone decorates and they have trick or treating from 4-7. This helps to avoid obnoxious teenagers too! I already purchased the candy and decorated the house!

Still am happy being CF but I enjoy seeing all the fun and excitement the holiday brings! I like spooky stuff too!

I actually enjoy Halloween. The kids are adorable in their costumes, and it's one of the few times a year when I can actually tolerate large numbers of kids. I usually pass out the candy when I'm in the States.

But I've lived in Germany now for the past few Halloweens, so no trick or treat here.

No, I keep the lights out and watch tv... and keep the treats for me. There are stupid annoying kids on my street that keep ringing the bell of their bike on the second floor balcony, because they're not allowed to use it on the street or in the park. What's the point in having a bike? So I always say: they bug me all summer... no treats for them on Halloween.
Besides, I prefer to dress up and go to a party. This year, my DH and I will be dressed up as a medieval couple.
