I nearly ran over a kid in my car tonight in a situation like this, I was driving through a parking lot by a gym, parents were doing something with their car, little toddler was running around unsupervised on the sidewalk, and I slowed because I knew it was going to happen. Sure enough, toddler runs out in front of me, Mommy at least 20 feet away, then she sees it and panics and runs after Junior! A kid that young and hyper has NO business being allowed near a parking lot without a parent attached! And of COURSE if the kid was hit she'd be on the news crying and getting people to feel sorry for her, and I'd have to answer a lot of questions from police and such...so I'll just slow down.

Several times when i was on the desk, kids would run out the front door onto the busy street. The parents would be totally oblivious to this, and five minutes later run around the place shouting for the child. Meanwhile the kid is playing in traffic....
I always pretended i hadn't seen the kid; it was always the same few idiot-moms it happened to.

Mrs. Ogre,

I am absolutely shocked! I ride public transit every day to and from work, and I have never, EVER had someone do something that crazy. Wow.

In order to protect myself, I usually avoid eye contact and staring or scowling at other passengers, even kids. That way, if one of them does something stupid or rude, I can very honestly say "What's the problem? I was just sitting here minding my own business."

I do try to smile at people if they've kept their kids quiet and still the entire ride. It's a silent "thank you" for respecting my space and my peace of mind.

If possible, I will also change seats to accomodate parents and children, but my motives are more selfish than they imagine...it gives me the creeps to be physically close to kids, and I am much more comfortable sitting as far away as possible! I play it off as an act of politeness, however, so everyone wins. I look good, they get to have a seat, and no one goes postal!

As far as your story goes, that's just rediculous. I mean, gosh, even the drunks on the bus here have better manners than that breeder and her sprog. Shame on them!

That one time, I was squeezed against the door over the electrified railing, far away from any exit, stuck to the woman. There was no way I could escape, unless all the people got off. Yesterday, I boarded the train at my usual station to go to a class. I noticed a woman with a toddler, but it seemed rather calm. How wrong I was. As soon as the door closed and I was trapped, it started wailing. Even with my MP3 playing Conga full blast, I could not avoid the yells. So I got off at the following station and hopped in the following wagon. Ahhhhh relief... I felt the same physical relief as having to pee so bad it hurts and then as by magic be seated on the best toilet seat ever and let it all go. It was that good!
