I have seen CF brought up in two different programs this week. "Bones" had the lead man, an FBI agent, completely baffled by the lead woman saying she did not want to have kids. She said she had nothing against kids but she didn't want them. He spent most of the episode saying all the usual pooty we hear so much, "you'll change your mind", "it's different when they are your own", and "what's wrong with kids?" And on an episode of "How I Met Your Mother" one of the lead women tells her boyfriend that she doesn't want to have kids and doesn't believe she will change her mind. He tells her that he wants two kids, a boy and a girl, and he is willing to take the chance that she will change her mind.

I'm not sure what to think about this. Men being used to push the issue is new to me - but we've been out of the country for a long time and I don't watch much American tv over here. Is this new or have you guys seen it before?

I was offended by the way the lead woman was treated in the episode of Bones. The guy just blew off everything she said and kept telling her what she thought and how she would feel and she didn't argue with him. I liked that she didn't feel the need to argue, but really didn't like that her feelings and more important, her decision was just ignored. That silly woman couldn't possibly have made a non mommy decision so we will just ignore her funny comments because we know better than her. It was insulting.

Did anyone else see these shows and if so what did you think? Happy Week! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Didn't see those particular episodes but have seen the shows in general. I like Bones and some of the others where some of the main characters are smart women (Law & Order, CSI). I hate it when they make the story lines go all mushy about romance and babies, though.

Anyone remember Mad About You with Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt? Great show UNTIL they added the kid factor. What was wrong with just showing a CF couple going about their lives? Why did it suddenly have to be about having a kid? Same thing with Friends. I never got into the whole everybody hooking up, having babies with each other, unhooking, etc. When it got baby crazy is when I stopped watching.

Yeah, once Mad About You and Friends brought babies into the picture they did get boring.

It does seem that many shows introduce a baby into the storyline once the show has been on for a number of years and the writers have run out of ideas. Then the show doesn't last for much longer. A baby can't save a marriage or a TV show!

I saw the Bones episode, and it was a bit irritating. Funny, I just watched an old Simpson's episode where the single and child free were tired of paying for the breeders offspring. Very funny. The ending kind of left you with the feeling of "breeders" not parents, but seemed to pick on both sides. Amusing.

A show I used to love was Dharma and Greg, they talked about kids sparingly, but the show did great until they started pushing the issue. It was fun to just see the issues couples have with in-laws and silly stuff.

i thought "'til death" was going to be about a cf couple, but instead, they're empty nesters. but they rarely seem to discuss the kiddos. unfortunately, the show isn't very good in my opinion. i think it's really contrived.

i was listening to the radio this morning, and one of the guys was talking about kids. it's a sportsradio talk station here in dallas/fort worth and geared to the 30-50 yr old male. all the guys on the shows have kids except for 2. one of them is in his 50s and has always been single and doesn't want to settle down. the other is in his 40s and just got married a year or so ago. the 40-ish guy was talking today about how he and his wife babysat his niece and nephew for 3 days. at the end of his story about how hard it was to do that for 3 days, he was asked if they were planning on having children. he said neither of them want kids, but they've always left the door open on the issue. and after this weekend, the door is closed almost all the way. lol. and the other hosts really supported them in their decision to remain childfree. i was surprised by that. if it were women sitting around talking, he would have been verbally attacked i think.

I was really disappointed with Frasier that they finally got Niles and Daphne together, and immediately they popped out a kid. BLEGH.

One of our irish soap operas recently had a storyline about a couple married for a couple of years, where the husband wanted kids and the wife figured she probably didn't. Now, it seemed to me that she was pretty much sure she didn't want kids. She had suffered from bullimia earlier on in the show (hey, i did say it was a soap!) and that was one of the reasons she didn't want to go down the baby road.
So, last week it came to a head with the husband saying that he was going to leave the marriage because she wouldn't have kids with him. So guess what?
Yup, you're right - she totally caved! Looking forward to their imminent marriage breakup due to her not wanting the kid when it arrives etc. Why do scriptwriters always take the easy way out??????
Saw that episode of bones as well; it was pretty insulting the way her decision was questioned. And it seems to me that she's the smarter of the two of them; surely it makes sense to take the views of intelligent people seriously???

They seem to make david B very cavemanish, for a lack of a better word, in Bones, always with the old fashioned thinking, yet he has a child out of wedlock. And he's always pumping religion on her too. If it wasn't for the mystery, I'd be surprised if I still watched the show.

The KING OF QUEENS is child free. What's her name even got PG in real life and they didn't write it in.

They started down the kid path on King of Queens, though. What's interesting is they dropped it. Maybe someone figured out that CF's actually have other people in their lives without popping one out. (though I'm probably giving them too much credit)

And I'll say this for Raymond - even though they had kids, the shows weren't usually about the kids. And the ones that were, usually made fun of stuff (like the one about the snacks at the soccer games and how snarky parents can be).
