Well, I suppose bettas don't have to be high maintenance...but they are much happier with bigger warmer tanks than just a small bowl in room temp water.

The art teacher at the school here in town has a betta in her class. Now she doesn't fuss with him at all...cleans him out once in awhile and feeds him, but...he is in a smaller bowl, room temp and just sits there..not doing much at all. She did just add a nice cave type thing which I think she made herself (she has pottery clay and a kiln to dry it in) so I think he's a bit happier...but...like I said, he doesn't swim around much and stays to the rear of the bowl, away from people.

My fish, which are kept warm, have a varied diet and have lots of fish company around them..are always swimming around and showing off. They are very animated and fun to watch...but I do fuss over them, probably more than I really need to. I do like these fish!

Hi again newbie Well they really aren't high maintainance comparatively...but yes its lots more than just taking them home in those little containers to stick them somewhere and feed them and change a ittle of there water every now and then. The good news is though happy bettas and happy betta owners actually get to know and enjoy each other just by the few extra minutes of time they spend together at feedings and again briefly for water change etc. Feed them just enough , warm themjust right and give them a nice clean environment and for the most part you have a healthy and gorgeously friendly fish to enjoy.

I don't know much about Bettas yet, myself, but I think they're definately worth it : ) I've started a fish journal for my own reference. I just mark down events of the day, like if I feed them a new food or if they're behaving in an odd way. I've already found it useful, it might be useful for you too. Just a suggestion, it's really the only help I can be until I learn more : )

What's going on??

I dunno. I'll ask.
WhHHaaAAAAAAAATTTs GooiiiNGG OooON?!

What's he saying?

This one's a little trickier... He's either saying, 'it's time to move to the back of the throat' or, he wants a strawberry float.

Well, Sweetie seems to have adapted to her new surroundings and tank mates. She's still got the big black stripes down her though. Should I be worried? Her fins are red and turquoise again, and she has the ovipositor showing white. Do ya think she'll settle down and color again? Her tank is not heated, so maybe she's shivering in there. eek

I'm planning to clean out the tanks this weekend and give them fresh water -- I'm hoping Sweetie and Pinky will be happier.

Nann...

My fish are always much happier in a warmer tank. I had Patriot in a 1 quart (or is it 2 ??) pet carrier type tank...he was looking a bit unhappy in there so..I put him in the new breeder tank I am starting as I need to get the biologic thing going anyway. He LOVES it! I have the temp set at 84 and that fish couldn't be happier..in fact..he spends time hanging out by the heater when it's on  I guess 84 isn't warm enough for him! I sure am going to hate booting him out when I am ready to spawn my marble..

eek !!!!!
Yesterday I was looking at my betta and frogs while I was feeding them, and all of the sudden, one of the frogs jumped up and bit the betta's tail! He pulled him around till he let go! It was super crazy. At first I was afraid for my baby dwarf frogs, but it should be the other way around!
I think the frog bit him because he was trying to eat their delicious shrimpies
