Nan, it's a one gal bettascene, right? No filter? Add one oto cat, then. With a bubbler, two is okay. Just give him a hidey (the oto cat).

Also, wrote this one for you:

Cat, I think you've hit on the solution. I have one female betta with platys, whcih works fine, but they are not as territorial as the males. Usually.

Jilly,
Thanks for the article, it was very helpful. LOL about Gollum! I have a friend who says her pets tell her their names -- I may have to wait to name the frogs. Spot just doesn't seem right.

Thanks Jilly. I'm rather proud of myself for thinking of it. Er... of course it was mum that thought of it... but it takes a lot of skill to move ornaments!

I have a question about articles! I've read a few of them regarding fishies on this site, but is there a place I can go to find a listing of all the fish articles?

My fishes seem to be getting along just fine now. Funny how a small change can make such a difference! I added an African Dwarf Frog yesterday, poor thing was trying to burry into the gravel. I need to get it a rock to hide under. My dad is trying to convice me to wash off some rocks from the backyard, but I'm terrified to do anything wrong! Am I taking a risk by using them?

Oh, and I updated my profile a bit, there's a pic of me and a link to my website. I'm very proud of my site, I designed it myself! Oh... and er... it's a little unclear, but click on the human girl with a tail and kitty ears to gain access to the site.

What's going on??

I dunno. I'll ask.
WhHHaaAAAAAAAATTTs GooiiiNGG OooON?!

What's he saying?

This one's a little trickier... He's either saying, 'it's time to move to the back of the throat' or, he wants a strawberry float.

hey newbie here, i read all the previous posts, and have not tried beta fix or salt yet. that said my poor "big red" seems quite ill. he just kind of hangs motionless sometimes on his side or lies on the bottom of the tank. we originally had him in a divided 5 gal. tank and just moved him into another tank tonight (sick bay). the other guy "houdini" seems fine though? big red hasn't been able to eat it seems.... almost like he isn't able to open his mouth wide enough. any suggestions???

Hello BettaNewbie!

Welcome to the fish forum

Gee...your betta certainly sounds like he's in trouble.. ..about the only thing you can do is keep him in a warm (78-85 degrees F)and quiet place and see if you can get some bettafix and aquarium salt in there for him. After that it's just wait and see. Try to keep his water as clean as you can..I know with the bettafix you aren't supposed to change the water once you start treatment..so make sure it's good and clean before you do. Then what I do is just syphon out the cruds on the bottom, taking as little water as possible out.

As far as feeding...if your fish's belly is all bloated and he seems to be having trouble swimming right, it could be constipation. If that's the case then you shouldn't try to feed him for at least a day...then offer him pieces of a cooked frozen pea....this works wonders for bound up fish!

If that doesn't seem to be the problem then do offer him some food, but if he doesn't eat it make sure you remove it from his bowl so it doesn't foul up the water.

I do wish you well with your fish...please let us know how he does!

Hi Newbie and welcome to the forum. I do hope you are able to get and find the betta fix for your little guy today. It can really be a life saver. Whether or not you think he might be having a problem with constipation he is still under a lot of stress and betta fix and the salt would both help move him in the right direction if done quickly. Like Emg said please let us know how your little guy is doing.

Oh yeah, don't worry about the bubblenest New, he'll make another one if he feels like it..by the way, bubblenests are signs of a happy fish He must really like the extra warmth! If he seems to be fine I would wait and watch him awhile before doing the bettafix treatment. If there are no signs of illness, fungus or finrot..then you shouldn't need to bettafix him.

Emg
