Cat, Hi and WELCOME!!!!!!!!! Heard about the betta nipping at your plattie. I heard that bettas have different personalities, so, mabye your betta is threatoned easily, or mabye he's very aggresive. I dunno myself, but I DO know that him making his gills pop out is regular. The just do that to show of at other fish. They do it at other fish to let them know to "steer clear", so don't worry about that. Now, about over feeding, it is easy to over feed fish. Feed them as much as recomended, and if that isn't anofe, they're going to have to live with it! Now, betta's are carnivors, and don't eat flakes. You'r going to have to get a different type of food to feed each type. (ask jilly for more detales ) And again, welcome :music: ! Emg's daughter And, also, you'll knowtis that there will be Emg AND Emg's daughter under Emgbettanut. Let's just say I couldn't get in.

Oh, and Jilly, my pink here has a odd kind of tail. It's spiky, but it's not long spikes(like a crown tail)but more dull, like the teeth of a saw,but a little further apart. His bottum fin is the same but the top is more veil like. Also, his fins don't drup as much as the veil. I've never seen fins like them!(it's outa this world  !) What kind of betta is he ? Even though he's got an odd(yet beautiful)tail, I still love him  !

Cat, it's only stressful at first, while you figure out how to set up each community. Add decorations, fake plants and hidey holes, and things might improve.

Also, try to add different kinds of food, in different locations around your tank, so everyone can get fed. You can also try to return the greedy platy, most shops will take them back in if things don't work out.

Thanks for the welcome Emg's daughter : )
And I might have to take the greedy fish back, dunno. As for plants and hidey holes, I've got a good hiding-in decoration and a good mass of hiding in plants. Now the Betta is claiming both as his personal territory and nipping at anyone who gets near it. I hardly see him because he's hiding so much. *sigh*
What's going on??
I dunno. I'll ask. WhHHaaAAAAAAAATTTs GooiiiNGG OooON?!
What's he saying?
This one's a little trickier... He's either saying, 'it's time to move to the back of the throat' or, he wants a strawberry float.

hmmm, let me know how things continue over the next few days, and we might have to reconsider. I think I need to write up an article about suitable tankmates for male bettas...the biggest problem is that fish don't follow the rule books. Some are quite mellow and some are very aggressive, even killers. You have to go with what you have. We'll talk more later after we see how things work out in your tank. Everything will be fine when either 1. they settle in, or 2. we get better tankmates.

My frogs seem to have adapted to their new environment quite well. Sweetie's water was getting gross again even though I just changed it, so I got out our blue plastic ear cleaner and used it to vaccuum up the yuck on the bottom of the tank, and low and behold, today her water is much cleaner. Pinky and his frog seem to be getting along ok, however, I think Mr. F is trying to figure out how to escape! I thought he was dead, floating on top of the water, so I tapped on the tank. He dove for the bottom so quickly it was funny. I had the tank lid off when changing water and I think Mr. F saw a chance for freedom. Sweetie and her frog are ignoring each other for now. Sweetie isn't that aggressive. Oh yeah, I found the baby ghost shrimp on the bottom of Sweetie's tank when I vaccuumed it out. I think they may not have liked the aquarium salt, or the bit of betta fix in the water. I would really like to get some kind of algae eater in the tanks, but can't figure out what to get. They are the Aqua Scene tanks -- got them at Walmart, but no lights in the hood. I don't have a heater for the tanks yet. I looked at cory's, but I think Jilly said they need at least 3 to school. I suspect that would totally overcrowd the tank. And the guy at Walmart recommended the ghost shrimp. Hey, the guy there actually seemed to know about and care about the fish!!

for algae, frogs, shrimp and corys won't do a thing. Little Otocinclus (Oto Cats) are fine and suck the walls quite well. If you get two, they should be okay. Actually, I think even one is fine, since my oto cats don't hang out together anyway.

Good news! I stragegically re-ortganized the aquarium space and things have improved a lot! (meaning I took the two ornaments and switched their places. Very technical stuff!)
The Betta still stays mostly on the left side of the tank, where he was before, but now that the hidey-hole log is on the opposite side of the tank, he seems to be much more tollerant of the other fish being in his 'territory'.
My THEORY is that he couldn't see in/around the log at all times, so when he suddenly turned a corner and found a fish in his territory he got mad. It's a guess, anyways. All the fish seem happier now! I'm thrilled!
AND I think the fish are starting to catch on a bit more to the idea of "hand over water=food". So I may not have to return the greedy fish. Here's hoping!

Thanks Jilly, But do you think the tank would be too crowded with 3 critters in it? Nan
