oh, for a hidey spot, put a rock in your tanks. any rock will do. They sometimes dig a little burrow uunder them and hang out there, sometimes they will hang just under the surface of the water. Weird little creatures.

He's a handsome little guy (aren't they all?)-teal body, red head, and his fins turn from teal to red. When he moves in the light he sometimes looks purple when the colors combine. He can see his reflection in the back of his tank, so he plays with himself somtimes, and he LOVES when I feed the frogs their brine shrimp. Other than that he's a laid back little dude...

I received a Betta for my birthday on Feb 19th. I was told today to put about two inches of fresh water in his tank and I did. However, he is not doing so well and looks like he may be dying (tear...). Does anyone have any ideas or remedies? He is motionless sometimes and will once in awhile get a burst of energy and swim for a few seconds, other than that he is motionless and just kind of floats...
I realize he could very well be dying and just accept that, but I thought I'd at least give it a try... thanks!

Nikki,

He may have gotten stressed out if the water you added to his tank was not the same temp or balance as what was in there. You need to warm his water up to between 78 and 85 degrees F.(gradually) and get some bettafix and add it to the water per instructions. A bit of water conditioner/stress coat is a good idea too...along with some aquarium salt in the water. There are some good ideas on other threads here about keeping a betta warm in his tank.

Give that a try and see how he does after a few days. Follow the instructions on the remedies and let us know how he does.

Jilly is very knowledgeable about fish, if there is anything which I suggested which isn't right, she would know..she may also have something else to add....so look for a post from her. Good luck!

Well, thanks for the info, but poor Herman died. My roommate came home and said, "Uhh, Nikki, I think he's passed..."
After awhile I'll get another one and hopefully that will go a lot better.
Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear that Nikki !

These are neat little fish. Maybe someday you'll get another. Read up about them all that you can find here at this site and others online. I started my interest earlier this year and I can't seem to get enough of them now!

Hi Nikki and welcome! I am sorry to hear about herman. But there's so much good info on this forum, well worth a good read with a cuppa hot brew and some time on your hands! And there's a LOT of little bettas out there that need a good home. The conditions in many stores are so horrid - Emg and I are always handing dead store bettas to bemused shop employees. So, yes, please do take a look into providing a nice home for the beautiful betta of your choice.

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new here and I'm really finding the form helpful and interesting! Btw, my name is pretty long, so most people just call me Cat : )

I have a blue/red/purple Crown Fin Betta that I just got yesterday (yet un-named). He's sharing a 10 gallon tank with two Ghost Shrimp and three Platys (one male, 2 female).

The Platys were the first to be put in the tank, then the Shrimp, then Mr. Betta himself. The thing that worries me is that the first day I got the Betta, he didn't attack anybody. However, today he's nipping at both female Platies quite regularly. The male Platy is very shy and has always hid a lot, so that's why I think he's not being nipped at. I'm confused! I did loads of reasearch and Bettas are supposed to be compatable with Platies! Worst of all, Mr. Betta totally ignores the shrimp! I'd rather he eat THEM for lunch than my poor Platies!

Other than that, my Betta also opens his gills constantly, really wide. Is that normal in a Crown Fin Betta? He always looks confrontational. My old regular Betta never did that!

What's going on??

I dunno. I'll ask.
WhHHaaAAAAAAAATTTs GooiiiNGG OooON?!

What's he saying?

This one's a little trickier... He's either saying, 'it's time to move to the back of the throat' or, he wants a strawberry float.

Oh, I forgot. The OTHER worry (are fish supposed to be so stressful? lol) is that my one female Platy eats ALLLLL the food she can get! While my other three fish are slower/shyier and don't get any unless I actually put my hand in the water and shoo the greedy one away. (which scares the other fish and they hide again  ) Its very difficult to get them all fed. I'm afraid I may end up overfeeding the greedy Platy and underfeeding everybody else. eek.
