I've come across many an ob/gyn with this sort of attitude. But there's not a thing you can do to force them to do a procedure. They should, however, provide you with that kind of information up front when you call to inquire about a first appointment. "Our doctors don't believe in blah-blah-blah..." and provide you with a referral to someone in the area that does work with elective procedures (if they have that information).

IMHO, I would think they only time a doctor would be required to offer a procedure would be if he/she had committed to accept an insurance policy that paid for this type of surgery or worked in an environment (clinic or hospital) that advocated non-medical sterilization.

Thankfully, my SO chose to be snipped and I didn't have to fight with this. It was very easy for him. The urologist didn't even really question his decision--just asked whether he wanted the permanent variety or the reversible procedure.

Thank you all for the wonderful advice. I will call them again to voice my opinion about the way I was treated-might even send the lawyer letter too <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />. I would have not been so angry if the receptionist came out and said that their docs won't do this on a woman with no kids.
But, this lady did not even offer a substitute. And, my insurance does pay for the tubal for a woman with no kids and there are no special things that BCBS require in order to have it done.
I will call the dr that I am scheduled with to make sure that they in fact perform this on a woman with no kids. I would hate to get there Tuesday and have to go through something like that again.
I am sticking to my guns. If all else fails, I know my ob-gyn will do it. I will just have to wait a few months to get it done. But, I will have my tubes tied this year!!!!! (Or hope to anyway). I will also call planned parenthood to see what they might suggest.
This is why I am so thankful for this forum. I have absolutely no one to share this with. Even those that support me in being CF do not support my desires to have the tubal ligation. One of my friends from work even stated "but those can be reversed." So, now I am thinking what can CF people do to convince others that we are serious!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is not even enough when we say we are going to get sterilized.
