I live in Toowoomba SW Queensland now.Yes the Gemfields mean Saphires ,Rubies Topaz.I was in a place called Anakie (anna Kee) and my dh worked around Saphire and Rubyvale. I used pieces of dowel rods and cut the hook into the ends,a friend made me a Tunisian hook out of brass but its to heavy for my bad arm. When i came here i got a wood turner tomake hooks for me to teach people with as i like thick hooks like the ones you can buy from MOEZ now. Recently i was able to buy some cable hooks from a friend in the USA which i love to use.

I had a great aunt that would come over to visit and I thought she was old and she was only 85....anyways I was about 3 and I use to sit and ask lots of questions whats that why how come....so she just handed me a hook and ball of yarn and I set and made a chain because that was what she tought me to do. then she would ask me what are you doing and I would say crow shedding!!! shed ask why and Id say cuase its fun!!! before long the whole family was laughing because I could not say the words but I could make a chain just as good and she could!!!

later I had a older lady in the church that I would set with after she had her heart surgury and I was 13. she showed me how to do a granny square and I would make diferent size square. then when I was working as a CNA one of the ladys showed me how to read pattern books and do different stichies!!! Now my mother and sister in law are teaching me how to figure the gauge to do dolles and doillys!!!

so I just you could say everyone taught me to crochet!!! lol

I think working at a historical village would be so much fun! Of course I love history and have visited many of these.

I started doing crochet years ago when I took a class using a crochet round as a base for a pin in a jewelry class. I love fiber of all sorts.

I've never gotten much past basics tho as the patterns are Greek to me!

My niece taught me about 40 years ago how to crochet. She was always crocheting something or other and my husband was in Korea at the time. So you know the saying. "Busy hands are happy hands"
I have always enjoyed making up patterns and trying new ones.
