What are some of the mean things people have said to you? Here are some my readers shared.

Here's a couple of ideas i heard bandied freely Habout when i was growing up in the interior of British Columbia in the 1950's and 60's:
1. Who does she/he think she/he is, she/he's got a lot of nerve going out in public like that when she/he's so FAT!!! (yes! i really did hear people articulating this sentiment up in that parochial, bordering on red neck part of the world!amazing!)
2. Fat people have such good nature's!
3. She's a lovely girl...too bad she's so heavy!

Got this one just this past week - a thinly disguised mean comment: While in Victoria Secrets shopping with my daughter a sales clerk came up and asked me if I 'would like to buy some makeup while my daughter shopped, as everyone should pamper themselves in some way'.

I was constanly being asked when I was due.
It finally got to the point that I would keep a running tally in my head of 4-5 months out so as not to make the situation worse. If people thought I was pregnant - than at least there was an excuse (in their minds) for me looking the way I did.
This wasn't said to me, but some boys were laughing about an overweight man that was running in a park "Yeah, like THAT'S gonna do any good!" I jumped on them real fast and said, "Well, at least he's trying! And it doesn't help to have people putting him down when he's doing something about it." It made me so mad.
My mom to me all the time: "You really shouldn't wear sleeveless tops."

I was in Victoria's Secret a couple of years ago to buy a gift. The sales girl approached me, looked me up and down and asked "Are you looking for a gift for someone?". I told her "Now I'm not looking for anything, thanks."

One of the meanest things I heard came from a doctor that I visited for an ear infection (not my own doctor - a stranger in a walk-in clinic). He asked if he could ask a personal question and then proceeded to ask me how I had sex at my size. (I was married, and in my late thirties.) I never reacted at the time - but was very surprised to say the least!

I just received this from a reader today, she gave me permission to post it here:
Good morning Moe,
Even since your article "Mean Things People Say", I've been thinking about what I want to do with the list. This is what I did. I had a grandfather who loved me unconditionally - before that word even came into common use. He's been dead for too many years now and I still miss him.
I printed out the list and attatched it to some helium filled balloons. Then, I took them outside and let go - sending them, and all the hurtful remarks - up to heaven to my grandfather. I imagine him reading the remarks, especially mine, and his big, brown eyes becoming so sad. He wraps me in one of his all embracing hugs and "makes things all better".
I didn't gain wieght until years after he died, but I know I am just as precious to him no matter how many pounds or grey hairs I have.
Thank you for compiling the list. I hope it has helped others as much as it has me.
Wishing you a sunshine day...Trish
