You know, I wonder if they'd argue the opposite as well - that women who receive fertility treatment and end up with multiple pregnancies, are also sinning against God's choice for them. And to all other types of medical intervention. Frankly it seems quite nonsensical.

I don't know if y'all remember or not, but when "test tube babies" were first being pioneered, and they were actually finding ways of helping infertile couples become pregnant - there was a HUGE backlash from the church; saying that it was unnatural and evil. I don't know if that is still the party line or not. I do know that when a woman is implanted with mutltiple eggs to better her chance of one actually "taking" if there are mutltiples - there comes into play the debate of abortion - whether or not it risks the mother's and babies' health.

I personally do not remember reading anywhere in the Bible where God said "Thou shalt not take precautions against having children." He does however charge parents with being responsible and loving - and to me I would think that limiting the number of children (to whatever # you can handle) would fall into that category.

Some women are such natural nurturers that they can give love and care to 5 and 6 kids and those children never feel any sense of neglect. Some women only have the capability of having 1 child and want to give their all to that child. I myself have 3 and sometimes find it a major struggle to meet all their needs - be it because of the large age gaps (14, 8, 3) or because 1 has Asperger's I don't know. But I will give up (and do) everything that I do and have to let them knwo they are loved and safe.

But women that just "pump out" babies for the money - welfare in the US, whatever it was you said in the UK - that's not love and caring, that's greed. Those children are raised with nothing except that money means everything.

God is the one that judges sin, and the majority of sin is intent - and that's what's in the heart. So don't worry about Deut. or Matt. or whoever it was that said sterilization was a sin. If i'm not mistaken, they are men anyway.

Ooo ooo, I'm gonna start another post (gotta figure out where to put it, though)

Cause I'm interested in hearing what you have to say on IVF - but that would be off subject here.

It is so easy to "encourage" others to bear more humans, but they don't get the hard to reason out consequences that follow.

What I think is that many are influenced by writings of others who lived in very different times. If you think about it, people used to have a lot of kids in order to help out on the farm (still do in third world countries) or family trade. You expected to lose a couple of them to disease and injury so you always had spares available. Adulthood wasn't always safe either so you made sure you had enough to survive adulthood to work and care for the elderly. The only way to accomplish all of that was by the numbers.

I don't have an issue with using texts (spiritual or otherwise) as guides for your inner life, but trying to behave in a manner consistent with life hundreds or thousands of years ago doesn't make sense.

i don't understand your reasoning. you say IVF is against mother nature so it's wrong, yet you feel people in third world countries should be steralised? isn't that against mother nature too?

Er, Holles, I sort of thought the thing about IVF being against nature was sort of sarcastic, you know, as a counter to those people who say using birth control is going against God's will and is unnatural, then go out and have IVF?

I can follow that logic ExoticPetsEditor.
Sorry to say, it's going to take some people a long time to look beyond their own backyard.

LauraL,
I taught in one high school for 17 years. Every year I had a child from the same family. Yes, there were 17 kids in that family. They looked shabby and most of them had bad acne and had great need of a dentist. Because of their religion, the parenst kept producing.

What made many teachers laugh is that twice in five years, the mother was named Mother of the Year by the town council!
Some mother!

The school is in a suburban town in New Jersey, 15 minutes from New York city. I'm not talking the backwoods here.

I find parents who simply keep producing and not limiting to be disgusting. Sorry but, if you have children, you have an obligation to take good care of them. These kids were not cared for.
