Thanks Franny. My hair seems healthy enough and I'm going to visit the hairdresser at least once first to get some good nutriotion on it. I stopped coloring my hair for almost 4 months now so the original color is almost all gone. I'm currently working on the idea of having the chance to get major curls or loose curls and try to see how much I would like it. It would be better if I could accept having curls so that it doesn't feel bad when I got the perm.

UPDATE: I made my decision. While I still have my doubts about it and sometimes would rather choose something else, I'm going to get a perm next week. On Tuesday 25/04 at 9 AM, I'm going to trust my hair to my stylist and see what happends. She offered me the option to remove the perm if I wouldn't like it, but at least told me that I will need to take care of it afterwards. I basically want to try just to see what it will look like and because I already bought some shampoo and conditioner for permed hair, which was a sign for me to take the plunge anyway. I sure hope it will work out OK next week. Can't wait.
EDIT: should it be OK to use some moisturizing conditioner (specifically for chemical treated hair) to get it at least a bit more healthy when I wash my hair tomorrow and Sunday?

Thanks for the support! Now I want to get a perm for sure. I will certainly use the spa hair treatment with the moisture conditioner on Sunday so I can spend some time relaxing and reading a book.
However... despite all this, it is uncertain as of yet if it's even going to be possible, since I might have to continue with my current job until the end of next week, so I should have to postpone the perm. I'm going to get a brief rundown on project progression at Friday, so I know whether I have to go next week. If not, I'm free on Tuesday for the perm, if not, I'll have to make a new appointment. I'll keep you updated!

Well, still a little update before the appointment... I'm starting to get my doubts, but I don't think much about the perm. It doesn't keep my mind occupied all day long, which is a good thing! I'm more hesitating because of the reactions of others and the entire process at the salon while other people are around, apart from the damage it could inflict. At least it's not going to be with rollers, but with benders (we call them papillots here), so it should be a little softer. I recognise this same reaction when I first wanted my hair colored. After reaching a point of no return, I left the stylist do it's thing and it worked out great.
I decided to set my point of no return for the perm at the placement of the first bender. After that, doubts are still allowed, but cancelling it is off. I'm just setting a border for myself so I don't quit while all benders are placed and she just wants to start putting perming lotion on my hair.
Pfffff, this is even harder then deciding to color my hair.

It's been since Tuesday, and I find myself finally some time and seem to be in the mood to tell how it worked out.
The perm worked out great! Like I mentioned: after putting the first bender in, I decided to see this as my point of no return. After she was finished, she went on to put the perm solution on. And then I then knew what people meant by the stinking smell. It was awefull.
I was very sceptic after the entire process, since my wet hair looked flat with a small tone of curl in it. But after the hairdresser started blow-drying my hair (giving me lots of tips in the meantime) I could see the curls started setting in.
I lost a lot of length, but it created much more fullness at the base and it worked out well. I'm actually quite happy about it. People around me usually don't notice, but I find it better that they don't say anything or just something bad.
If I didn't know perming was so damaging and if it wouldn't stink that much, I would certainly perm my hair frequently for a long time.
I just wonder how my hair will look like in a couple of months. Does it fade after a long time or am I going to have to get a new perm?
I'm starting to like it more and more each day and would like to know if it's possible to sort of pile it on top while having lots of curls. Oh well, lots of plans. :-)

Great news Isa. It sounds like your perm turned out well.
If you keep your hair in good condition - regular conditioning (protein & moisture) treatments, protect it from too much sun (tanning beds too) and keep the ends trimmed, having it repermed when it grows out should not be a problem. With long hair, your perm should be good for at least 3 months.
Depending on your hair -- sometimes the curl relaxes a little after 2 weeks, sometimes it stays exactly as it looked on the first day.
