Dave, here's what the term "free market" meeans:

* In a "free market" there is no intervention by 3rd party (like a government). The market sets the price, rewards the most efficient participants and kills the weak ones.

* In the United States of America, the 2005 "Energy Bill" established a taxpayer subsidy for the oil industry part of the U.S. energy market.

* So, WE DO **NOT** HAVE A FREE MARKET FOR ENERGY because -

*** TAX PAYER SUBSIDY = GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN THE MARKET = NO "FREE MARKET" !!! ***

I don't know how to make it more clear.

The US government is artificially reducing the costs for the OIL INDUSTRY, and, actually, making it more difficult for the "alternative fuels" (which you claim to support) to compete with the oil industry.

It subsidized exploration and development. Just like they do with the agriculture industry, the drug industry, etc. NOT PRICE. The gov. subsidizes lots of research. Are you opposed to all of it or do you just discriminate against the oil companies?

Yes, the government does subsidize research, but this isn't a subsidy for "research." It's a tax subsidy. That means they don't have to pay taxes they would otherwise owe.

Do you know who makes up for the taxes the oil companies don't pay? You do! I do! Worse - our children and grandchildren do!

Tax dollars that should be flowing into the U.S. Treasury don't flow in, so our children and grandchildren will be paying that bill. So the national debt reaches nearly $9,000,000,000,000 - that's $9 TRILLION DOLLARS!!!

Do I "discriminate" against the oil companies? No. I just have this strange, obviously old-fashioned idea that things should be "fair" - admittedly a quaint belief in these times.

Is it "fair" to allow the oil companies to drill in the Artic National Wild Life Refuge, feeding our "addiction" to oil, while giving them BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in tax breaks!

No! Not fair! Not right! Not good! STUPID, in fact!

Stop the personal attacks, Dave, and stick to the issues.

Wind energy also get the tax breaks. So they have more profits for research and development. So does the coal industry. So does the nuclear power industry. The nuclear power industry couldn't even exist without them because the startup costs for just one reactor are so high. As I said though, I support all these alternative energy sources. I just don't think it needs to be a political football.

Do a little research, Dave. Compare the "tax breaks" the other industries get in comparison with the tax breaks that the oil industry gets! It ain't even close.

Who made it "a political football" do you think? People like me who want to see real alternatives or the Bush administration who wants to see oil profits as high as possible?

With this administration and this political environment, everything is a "political football" now. We have George to thank for that as well.

Like I said, I'm all for alternative fuels. When the price of gas makes people want mopeds then it will change.

When the Bush administration stops making tax payers subsidize the oil industry is when the price of gasoline will hit reality.
