It's amazing how quickly times passes. You think you are current and then discover the world has totally revamped the way a resume should be presented. I really need to get on mine and perk it up.

How important is a resume, actually?

I always find working on the resume so difficult- I am not the most concise writer. I know all the right buzz words and am a pretty decent editor of others' resumes.
I have trouble with my own prioritizing tasks and also conveying what the company does- worked in some hybrid firms that don't really fit into an easy classification.

I think the biggest problem is that we are fully capable of giving credit to others and the work they do, but tend to minimize what we, ourselves, do. And those many things that really do enlarge our skills, when viewed by a potential employer/client, are also left off.
I'm sure you would have quite an impressive resume if you literally wrote down each duty you performed on a large sheet of paper and then transformed them into strong "resume" reading. That's your homework. Let me know what happens. <img src="/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Yep, I definitely am self-critical. Thanks for "assigning me the homework" sometimes that extra nudge makes all the diference.
I planned to update my resume in the next week or so, and now I'm going to hold myself to it.

Good for you. And, I'm sure you'll be delighted with the results of just how skilled and capable you are at what you do!

Hmmm. It appears as though most would revise and/or add the current work history. Good. You're on top of things.

Moving from a standard resume to an academic CV was a big issue for me. I had a lot of trouble moving past that old "don't go more than 2 pages rule." It was unnerving!
What's even more difficult though is applying for positions that state "application only" and don't allow resumes. After all that work!
I'm hoping, however, that the full-time job I have now will be the last one I have working for someone else. Assuming my small business and/or writing takes off... keep your fingers crossed!
