Meditation is not supposed to be used as an aid to sleep. That's a job for relaxation exercises.... The point of meditation is to develop mental perspicacity, acuity and perception. Meditation is a discipline, not an aid to calm and peaceful sleep. That's the point. It's something to be practise in an alert and wakeful state of mind. Whatever it is you're doing to help you gain sleep - it's not 'meditation'....

Since one is still alert, I recommend getting up and sitting for the meditation, then when feeling peaceful climb back under the covers.

I meditate first thing in the morning. My brain isn't totally awake so it makes it easier for me to be calm longer.
Afterward I'll do some of my best writing, thinking or problem solving.

I like to meditate in the evening after I'm finished with everything that I needed to get done that day. That way I can relax and those thoughts of what I need to do next don't keep popping in. I'm fairly new at this, but I'm finding that it is an amazing thing to be able to clear your mind. I feel so peaceful and free.

So far, morning and evening seem to suit most of us best ...

Susan: I wanted to say I just came across your articles and they are FABULOUS! I am an avid "self-improvement buff" and your articles are some of the most well expressed articles I have read! Thank you.

Evening, before bed. I like my sleep to much for it to be in the morning!!

I am; I have been meditating for two years, off & on. I am trying to get back to it since it has helped me a lot, with many issues. I saw your article on the cover page, and then I looked at your other articles, and as I said, I am very impressed with your writing and the way you are able to convey what you are thinking. I also read a lot of other subjects, so I know a good writer when I see one. I haven't been to this forum but now I know where else to go regularly!
I actually don't like morning meditation - I need it more during the day! Sometimes at night, but it is better for me during the work day!

Nicola, I find it hard to get up and functioning before my cup of coffee - I'm not a morning meditator, either.
BillieCat, that's great you can take time to meditate during the work day. It can be a big stress relief.
