Unfortunately, I do live in close proximity to many children, and it doesn't help the fact that we live down the street from an elementary school either. (BUT the county is building a new elementary school and the one down the street will be closed down within a few years so THANK GOD for that)

But as far as the person who posted that it's up to us to choose not to live near public schools or daycares or have big houses or big yards - - at this rate if I chose to live THAT far away from any presence of children, I'd end up living next-door to a bunch of sex offenders because of all the laws they have nowadays.

I think small towns especially are way too lenient with children. We live in a small town and also on a street that has a 90-degree turn in it. More times than not, when I leave for work in the mornings and come around that corner (on the correct side of the street mind you), there are almost ALWAYS kids on their bikes or skateboards in the MIDDLE of the street! I seriously think that no one will do anything until some kid gets killed! It's very sad and pathetic but it's true. A gal I talked to that works at the local convenience store mentioned that she's seen several kids just ride their bikes and dart out in front of cars on the corner there - - ironically she said the same thing I've thought before - - when a kid gets killed then parents will finally open their eyes but that unfortunately that no matter whether it was the kid's fault or not, the parents will probably try to sue the awful person driving the vehicle that was obeying the law!

In any case, I'm already planning on saving up for a house built on our own plot of land...OUT of town. Someday....

UPDATE:
Tresanne- I have reached the conclusion that I too must save up for a home somewhere else. I am fortunate that it might not take too long thanks to the rapidly increasing values of homes in the Tucson area. My husband and I went out last night to check out a new neighborhood. It is gated, with no backdoor neighbors and is a lot less likely to have hoards of kids running around. Loved it, but alas the $500k+ price tag is a wee bit over the top for us right now (saracsm)...so I suppose we will hang in there (Talking to parents didn't do much good- they just don't seem to get "it.")

The latest nuisance is neighborhood children approaching my door to sell me everything from magazines to chocolate bars (which my butt does not need thank you) and cupon discount books. Fortunately, I get to choose when I open the door.

I also figure that I can throw very loud parties until all hours and allow my noise to take over the street, right? I mean, if they get to be disruptive, I am going to do it as well...fair is fair :-)
