The Ram Cichlids are shy and so it's better not to put them with agressive fish and they need to have their tank be made to look like their natural habitats in Venezuela and Columbia. The main thing is to keep their water very clean - which includes having a good filtration system. They are very intolerant to high levels of Nitrates and other pollutants in the water - this can cause great distress and this distress may cause them to become cannabalistic. The water must be kept very clean. They are not the easiest of the cichlids to maintain, but well worth it with a little studying of the species and preparation. The larger tank you have - and the less fish in each tank - the better chance you have of maintaining clean, healthy water for a happier, less stressed fishy member of your family! : )
