A major storm blanketed the Northeast with 2 to 3 feet of snow. The storm caused many airports to close and delays on highways. Massachusetts and Rhode Island governors declared a state of emergency.

A 70 foot tall wave hit a Norwegian Cruise ship this week. The ship had some damage and 4 passengers were injured. Does anyone else not want to take a cruise after hearing that story? Or do you think it was just a fluke of nature and nothing to be worried about?

Hurricane Katrina devastated areas of the Gulf Coast last week. 80% of New Orleans was covered in water and tens of thousands of residents were still stranded and waiting to be evacuated.

As of today Hurricane Maria was out in the Atlantic and has winds of 100 mph but luckily we can say goodbye to Maria as she is headed off to the Atlantic graveyard for hurricanes and poses no threat to anyone on the East Coast

What about Rita? Top winds at 8 AM EDT (9/22)were 170 mph making it a category 5 hurricane.
Rita "continues on a west-northwestward track through the Gulf of Mexico over the next 12 hours. A turn toward the northwest is anticipated Thursday night and Friday."

I am just shocked to see these people that can leave just staying. One woman said she didn't think it was going to hit that hard. I wish the newsperson would have asked if she watched the news during NO. Just listen to the weather people already. They do this for a living.

Hi Judith,
Yes thanks for updating this topic about Rita for me. I really appreciate it. I've been kept busying writing about Rita for the weather site and answering all the questions I've been receiving about hurricanes lately. I agree with you 100% on the not getting out while you can. I hate when I watch the news and hear people say oh we are going to ride it out we've been through storms before. Well I always say that a hurricane is not something to take lightly. You never know what will happen and you should keep yourself safe. You can always replace possessions but you cannot replace yourself. I wish people would listen to the forecasters and get out of the area if they can when they are told that they should. Even if the storm wobbles off to another area its better to be safe than be stuck in the middle of a hurricane with no way to get help. I was in a category 2 and that was something to see so I cannot even imagine trying to ride out a category 4 or 5.

I grew up in South GA, northeast of the FL panhandle. We had a few hurricanes, but we got lots of weather off other ones that we were not hit by. I lived there when Tropical Storm Alberto caused the Flint River to flood the area. We were lucky, but it was bad. I grew up fishing the Flint and it is amazing to see how much that flood changed it.
