I had a conversation recently with a young woman and her husband who have a baby. They were discussing the cost of babyfood. I told them they needed to stop buying babyfood.

When my oldest son was a baby I bought cans of carrots and peas and pureed them, or mashed them. I them put the mashed veggies into ice cube trays and froze them. Once frozen I put the cubes into resealable freezer bags.

I had ready, meal size portions of vegetables at a fraction of the cost of babyfood. It only took a short time to do.

It's absolutely true! I can testify to that. My highest weight was when I had the least amount of money to spend on food. The "sale" flier for the grocery store was not supporting healthful eating, either. I'll never forget the cheap white bread and macaroni and cheese dinners with peanut butter and jelly lunches. It was horrible. Now, I still struggle to eat well, but I make it a priority to buy the best, lowest-carb real food I can.

Exactly, TheBoss - what do these people think babies ate before Gerber came around? They ate *real food* mashed up by moms! That is all Gerber is doing, but gerber often throws sugar and other stuff in there. Heck, we have food processors, which none of our ancestors had!

It is really pretty scary that "fake" bad food is cheap, but that "real" good food is expensive. I think some of us get spoiled by having very nice supermarkets near us. Go to a poor inner city sometime and see what they have on those little supermarket shelves. Very rarely is it fresh veggies and fruits. Normally it is stuff that can sit on a shelf - mac & cheese, white bread, nasty stuff. And it is all very expensive. We really have to teach people how to have window gardens. If only we could get every home to have a window garden, right there we would really help out.

That's a thought - teaching people about kitchen gardens - esp indoors. It is so easy it laughable. But who has time for anything these days? Anyway, I am going to have to really put my money where my mouth is, since I am moving into my RV...it will be a challenge to keep growing there, but at least I will have lots of time to think about how to "make it so".

Once I get into the RV for good, I'll be posting articles on Living Simply about how to do a food garden with almost NO Space. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

It doesn't even take space - I have some peat pots in my back window right now and it took me maybe 1/2 hr to get a TON of squash, tomatoes, spinach, basil and other plants started. They are doing amazingly well so far, it's been a week. I will be completely swamped with these things in a few months. People spend more time going to and from the grocery store than that! Never mind all the money they waste on gas and groceries ... people really should have home gardens. It's very sad that they don't any more.
