Susan, I've been thinking of the subject of different types of meditations. As a "mental type", meditation is often counter-productive to me. I benefit more from "moving meditation", or some mindfulness practice that gets me into my body/the 5 senses (Earth is my weakest element). For example (don't laugh), painting my nails, getting a bubble bath, or a myofascial release massage is like meditation for me.

Do you have any theories on different types of meditation for different personality types? For example, the Enneagram (but one personality/sprituality system) divides people into 9 Types. These types are split into Triads: Mental, Heart, and Gut.

I could go on and on... hehehehe

Btw, I recently came across a hilariously irreverent quote from Osho about mantras. It's featured in his book The ABC of Enlightenment - A Spiritual Dictionary For The Here And Now:

Quote:
Chanting a mantra can only dull your mind; all repetition dulls the mind, makes you silly and stupid. If you simply go on chanting a mantra, it kills your sensitivity, it creates boredom, it brings a sort of slumber to your consciousness. You become more unconscious than conscious, you start slipping into sleep. Mothers have known always that when a child is restless and cannot go to sleep they must sing a lullaby. A lullaby is a mantra. The mother repeats something again and again and the child feels bored. The constant repetition creates a monotonous atmosphere. The child cannot escape anywhere--the mother is sitting by the side of the bed repeating the lullaby. The child cannot escape; the child cannot say, "Shut up!" He has to listen. The only escape available is to go into sleep, so he tries that--to avoid this lullaby and to avoid this mother! A mantra works the same way: you starte repeating a certain word and then you create a monotonous state for yourself. All monotony is deadening; all monotony dulls you, destroys your sharpness...

Real silence is very alive, throbbing. Real silence is positive; it has energy in it, it is intelligent, aware, full of life and zest. It has enthusiasm in it.

LOL!

Hi Janet,

Rajneesh (Osho) has a good point and BTW I really like his writings - too bad all the outer stuff got in the way.

Well, yes, I do think we all lean toward a certain meditation style right for us. Personally, I favor moving meditation because I'm more of a kinesthetic learner, anyway.

But, back to the quote - I find that mantra or japa meditation, verbally and then mentally repeating a mantra had quite the opposite effect from what Osho describes.

In the early stages of my mantra practice (30 years ago) it preoccupied my mind enough so that I became aware of my conscious self beyond thought - the state of observer - which to me is vibrant and full of life and energy.

I think it is best to practice mantra repetition while sitting up - to stay awake - and precede it with a few moments of positive thinking and loving thoughts for at least one person beyond myself.

On the Meditation site, the subject titled Eastern Meditations has a variety of styles to choose from that can incorporate mantra repetition:

And the Dance and Motion subject heading lists meditations that raise energy and bliss, a feeling of connectedness with others and creation:

Thanks for the additional info.!

Re: "too bad all the outer stuff got in the way." What does this mean? I received that book I quoted from, and another, in the mail for review (unsolicited). Other than hearing of OSHO Zen Tarot, I don't know much about him. Is he the same Rajneesh that the Beatles followed? The one that had a bunch of Bentley's or something? (I'm so not a guru follower, 'cept for Jesus. LOL)

Oh... Well, that's certainly a revelation! I guess you learn something new every day. Now I don't want to read the books. LOL

I'm not saying his writings aren't okay - what is interesting is IMHO human nature has many sides - I like the philosophy of living in the world, but not being part of the world. To me that means not depending on what's changeable in the world for my happiness - rather, just being kind, and using my skills for the benefit of all - things generated from me that I can choose to share or not. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> In kindness and sharing I feel the most happiness.
