Is it considered a *good* insect, that is, beneficial in some way, as opposed to just being a pest?

Yes (I'm not counting this question for the reason listed below)
In my opinion, all insects are good. They are food for other animals, they spread pollen, etc. Only in our "perfect" homes, are insects considered to be pests.

Well, then, you can have all our mosquitoes and black flies . I'll pack 'em up and send them out your way. Besides biting and itching like crazy, the mosquito is the major culprit in spreading the recent West Nile Virus. That's what I meant. The newest *bad* one to hit our area is the Asian Longhorn Beetle and it is causing so much damage, that thousands of maple and other trees are being cut down now in the effort to stop the destruction before it gets out of control. I'm not sure that this solution isn't, itself, a bit out of control and there is lots of controversy over this here. It's in the news alot lately. I'll post about it separately, later.
I do understand your point, though. The whole food chain thing. I don't disagree, but you knew what I meant by my question, right?

OK, this is Lois thinking out loud. It's an insect, but it doesn't have wings. So it's not a flying insect. Spiders technically aren't insects. So that leaves so very few. Is it a type of ant?
Mmmmmmmmmmm....Baps
