Here in California, the original seat belt law said they couldn't pull you over just for not wearing one. Not too long ago, the law was changed and now they can and do stop (and $ticket$) you for seat belt violations. I can remember playing all over the back seat of the family car as a child--that memory sure shocked me when I became a mother <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Originally posted by Computer Games: [qb]Really? I always wear mine. Sounds ridiculous, but not because I think of my own safety, but I want my kids to follow cue!

I always wear my seatbelt also. Sometimes when I put my son in his booster seat...and I'm in a hurry, I forget to buckle him in..he's 2.5..and he'll say, before I even start the car..."Um, excuse me, but you need to buckle my belt!" My almost 4-year old nephew also makes sure I buckle in too whether I'm in his car or in my car. It's become such a habit that I feel strange if I don't buckle it.

Wow! If you think about it, it should be similar to that everywhere!

Wow, I must say 100% of us/you are always wearing their seatbelts! That's interesting. I'd say I've always worn mine but only learnt a few years back what this really means when I was in a serious crash. After that I don't think I'd ever forget to put it on - even if I live to be a hundred... Although, here in Ireland I see many people driving with, say two or three or more kids in the back, and none of them is wearing a seat belt! It always amazes me. How come people think it's OK for them to wear them in the front but let their kids play all around the car without any protection?

I think it's an "easy" thing for some parents, their kids are already rambunctious and they figure it's not worth the hassle to force them to buckle up. But when that car hits something and the kid goes flying through the windshield, I think they'll realize how serious it can be. I still remember a movie - Dead Calm maybe? - that began with a scene of a mom and her kid, and they get into a car crash and the kid goes sailing through the windshield. It really horrified me.
Drunk driving is definitely something that should be punished, because so many times it's the innocent other people on the road that are killed by the drunk person.

We always wear our seatbelts. I refuse to start the car until everyone is buckled in. Here in Massachusetts they are going to start pulling people over for seatbelf violations for about a month. It always amazes me to see how many children around here are not buckled in and/or sitting in their parents' laps while they are in the car.

Right, you could understand it maybe 20 years ago, when people didn't really know about seatbelts. But nowadays it's been proven so many times how they save lives. A little kid is just like a little projectile.

I didn't realize it wasn't a law in other states yet. I've always worn mine, at age 21 I can't remember a time when it wasn't put on your seat belt I don't want a ticket. (I'm in Texas.) I'm sure safety is a concern too, but I've always remembered it being a law to bucle up. In fact road signs now like to advertice:
CLICK IT OR TICKET!
