Hello to all in the forum. My favorite place is Malaga, Spain. I married a woman from that area and have family there. If you visit Spain, refer to yourself as a traveller rather than a tourist; there is a huge difference in meaning. If you decide to eat in a restraunt have "la menu de dia" this i9s usually a lot less expensive and has much more to eat.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Tons of people planning a trip to Europe will benefit immensely from your experiences. Thank you so much for posting! Also, thanks for clearing up the whole Holland-Netherlands mystery for me Now, while we are on the subject of unsolved mysteries... maybe you can tell me how do you get the adjective "Dutch" from your nation -- is it some derivation of Deutch/German or am I way off here? Be my teacher please!!

My Great Uncle left England for Malaga. A stark contrast to the grey skies of England he left behind -- but I think that was his point! Do you and your wife have any special suggestions for travelers to southern Spain from a local perspective? Local cuisine perhaps? A favorite cathedral to visit?

The city of Malaga is the capital city of the Province of Malaga. Malaga is refered to as The Costa Del Sol (or Sun Coast). The principal cities that are part of this province are Torremolinos and Marbella and a lot of smaller towns. The city of Malaga has many things to see including the Cathedral, The Alcazaba (Roman Theatre and Moorish Castle), The Central Park, The Museum of Picasso and the list goes on. The principal meal dishes are seafood and the variety is very extensive. The amazing thing is that such a variety of seafood is available and it is prepared in so many different ways. If you do not like seafood there are a variety of different dishes available. drinks with the meal include beer or a red table wine with a fruit flavored seltzer water. A half glass of the seltzer water mixed with the wine is quite normal. Enjoy your meal and don't be in a rush. If you like to fix your own meals than by all means visit one of the supermarkets. Inside the supermarket you will find a variety of foods that would boggle the mind.
When in Spain refer to yourself as a "viajero" or traveler rather than a tourist. A viajero commands respect and understanding everywhere in Spain: you may not be Spanish but you are there to learn. Depending on what time of year you go it is very hot, warm or rainy and cold. I like to walk down the side streets and look at the different shops that abound. This is a real paradise for women who are looking for jewlery because anything less than 18kt. is considered almost like fake and if the jewelry has any stones, they are the real thing. Fashon clothing is available everywhere and the quality is very good to haute coutre; so have fun ladies but please don't send your better-half to the poor house with your purchases.
For the young at heart and the romantic there are the tourist areas that have many night-clubs and these night-clubs do not close until almost day break; so have fun.
There are parts of the Costa Del Sol that cater to English, German, French and Scandanavian visitors. These enclaves are scattered all over and it is not hard to find a friendly tongue or someone from your country.
Many of the people live in high rise apartments/flats or whatever you may call them and from the outside they may look mean and crude but I can assure you that when you go past the walls it is like entering another world; sometimes you think that you were entering a palace or something from a dream/fantasy. The people of Southern Spain are very friendly and proud. Enjoy the culture, have fun and get immersed and you will have an enjoyable time. P.S. do not rent a car. The cost is very expensive and driving is very dangerous. Taxis, buses and trains are more cost effective and safer. Do not forget travellers insurance that covers medical expenses if needed.

Here's a link about the origins of the word Dutch, searched out by my husband, Stan Schaap, a native Dutchman.

Susan. Thanks! I think I remember reading in the Editor's Forum that you live in the Netherlands now. Do you and Stan have any "insider" information you can share with people planning a trip? Any overrated tourist traps to be avoided -- or any hidden gems not to be missed?

I'm Spanish but I live in Asturias, in the north of the country. Not many tourists come, it's more likely to meet travellers. This area is absolutely different to the rest of Spain, high mountains, inmense sandy beaches and green fields everywhere. It's a little bit like the north of England or Scotland.
I would also like to recommend you Caceres. The city is a monument, the old city is full of palaces, churches, etc, no cars and not many tourists. The villages around it are really lovely, food is great but if you during August, it's really really hot. You can't walk at midday because you melt. Not many people visit it but it's worth doing it.
