Vannie,

Hi! I haven't been back for a few days--busy week. My second read aloud had two attentive readers! I don't mind at all, if they want to doze while I read that's okay. Changing my voice for each character is part of the fun I get from oral reading

Without giving away too much of the plot, I would like to draw your attention to the foreshadowing that is going on in regard to the masque ball where the Prince will name his intended. I wonder what surprise Lorcan has in store for us?

Something I'm really enjoying is the way Aurora can pull the female wiles out whenever she needs them. We assume that she had never been flirtateous in her earlier life, it doesn't fit in with the girl raised to be a warrior. I guess we are just born knowing, tee hee!

I'll probably check the posts again on Sunday evening. Talk to you then.

Jean

Remember at one point when she is talking to deat mother she says something like "I have power but it's woman's power." So I think you are right. It's inate in all of us

I have to admit that I am not overly fond of Prince Owen, Lorcan's son, but I do like Aurora's 'wolf'.

Jean, we never decided how many chapters we would read each week. If we are clear on that we won't worry about giving spoilers to one another. There are only 11 chapters. At what chapter did you stop with your senior group?

Hi Vannie,

I can only read 30 pages at a time when I read to the seniors, so I have been reading ahead on my own. Tell me where you are and then we can make our plan.

Actually I finished the story last night. It's so short I had been reading just a few pages here and there.

You seem to read 3 to 4 chapters at a time (30 pages). The next offering WINTER ROSE has 10 chapters. I suggest that you and I read 3, 3 and 4 this way we can discuss the characters more fully and without fear of spoilers over a three week period.

My sense of Lorcan is that he does not particularly like women. He had sex with his three wives, but I suspect he did not make love to either of them. One got lucky and died, one he put in a dungeon and declared her a witch, he has placed Brynn is a position where she fears for her childrens life and her own. He even talks about one of his daughters as "a bargaining chip" He is not a nice man But in stories like these - you have to have an evil king.

Hi Vannie,

My seniors and I will finish The Witching Hour on Monday. I have 3 attentive listeners now and they are looking forward to the triumph of good over evil.

I've read the first 3 chapters of Winter Rose. I'm liking this story better than the first. I wasn't overly fond of the intense conflict that permeated The Witching Hour--all that swordplay! This next one is more romantic and mysterious. I love the idea of the spell that froze the kingdom into eternal winter. Of course, it will be the heat of love that melts the spell.

Meet you at chapter 6!

Jean

Jean,

Happy first day of summer

I have not yet started Winter Rose . Will do on my lunch hour. I will 'see' you Thursday to discuss that and the end of The Witching Hour.

Hey, do your seniors talk to you about the story?

Okay, Vannie, see you Thursday!

Yes, they are really getting involved. Two of the women are big Nora Roberts fans.

As you start on Winter Rose, it might be fun for us to do a compare and contrast between the two stories. As I had mentioned above, the tone of the second story is more romantic and less conflictive.

I am really enjoying Winter Rose. For me this is miles ahead of The Witching Hour. I much prefer Deirdre to Aurora. While both women are strong, determined and focused Deirdre seems softer. I'm not sure if that's the word I am searching for. I am also finding that this story drew me in more quickly than The Witching Hour. What's interesting is that the stories are so different and still the same. Ooops I just figured out why I like Deirdre, she is a 'hands on' person. I think that's the reason she appears to be more gentle than Aurora. (If you have seen old episodes of Star Trek, there is one titled 'The Empath'(for empathy?) and like Deirdre, the character was able to heal.)

I will be away for the weekend (a little R&R). We are leaving early tomorrow and return Sunday. I am anxious to hear your thoughts.

Jean,

Hope you had a good weekend. The weather was wonderful at the Jersey Shore. I decided to go ahead and finish Winter Rose while I was away. I am such an early riser, at 5:30 a.m. I was sitting out on the balconly reading Nora with my sun glasses on and a coffee mug in my hand. (mmmm deep sigh)

I really loved this story.

Hi Vannie,

I've finished Winter Rose, too. I enjoyed it! A perfect fairy tale love story. Yes, I found this story much easier to get lost in a easier to identify with.

I've just started on A World Apart. This one is only 9 chapters in all. Shall we read 3 at a time and meet back?

Jean
