While housesitting for my parents in June, I spent one night enjoying the glut of cable tv they have. In one of those, "hey it's on, I'll watch it" moments I watched Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses.
wow... there sure were some gross out moments in that one. I noticed references to just about every modern and post-modern horror movie from the last 20 years in it too...
anyone else got anything to say about this?

It was like a big send-up of every big horror film ever made, while being gross but not necessarily terrifying. Once you've had three false ending-like moments, you start to watch for the next one, and the next one, and the next one.....
I alternated between laughing and going "eeewww, that is one effective special effect...."

you know what, when the Exorcist first came out, back in the 70s, the crabwalk wasn't even in it. It was that voice coming out of a little girl and that face that did it to me....
so, what is your idea of a horror movie? I tend to separate scary from gory, as the two can have nothing to do with one another.
I find I have had more scares from reading than movies, which more often that not are just gross....

Just to give you some perspective, tiflynn, I was a freshman in high school already by the time you were born. Or put another way, I was grossed out by the melting heads at the end of Radiers of the Lost Ark the year before you were born.
The first Alien movie, which came out in 1979, was terrifying. You didn't hardly see the creature for most of it, and everyone creeping around in the dark spaceship kept just about everyone on edge the entire time. The later movies went heavy on effects and showing the monsters.
A few really schlocky 70s films had bits that kept me awake as a kid. One was called Parts: the Clonus Horror. The part where they put a guy in a plastic bag and quick suffocate him to freeze him for his organs totally freaked me out at the age of 12, and then 20 years later, I got to watch the guys of MST3K rip that movie to shreds.

I know this is an old post, but let's try to bring it back to life. Although not really scary, one of the coolest "horrow" movies to me is Thirteen Ghosts. I love that one. I have yet to find a movie that actually scares me. In order to do so, something has to be a complete surprise and very graphic. Not in a sick, sadistic way, just stuff that looks real.

It gave me NIGHTMARES FROM HELL! I thought I wasnt going to make it out of the movie myself. I cheered her on like hell.

I really liked it, but then I am a Rob Zombie fangirl. I loved the garish colours, the false endings and the way it didn't take itself seriously. Although parts of it were very, very gross.
I've been meaning to see the sequel, The Devil's Rejects, too. I have no idea how I managed to miss it at the cinema!

I like Ghostship! that was a scary movie for some reason...lol I use to watch the old black and white fready kruger on tv and the show its self was not scary but they would give me nightmares for a month! I would dream fready was chasing me around the church i went to and every door I opened there was a dead relative that had been torchered to death.
I have never watched any of the night mare on elmstreet movies just the black and white tv show that is now off air and has been for years.

You know, House of 1000 Corpses was alright, but The Devil's Rejects? Brilliant.

I was very disappointed when I rented it years ago. I'm a big White Zombie and Rob Zombie fan so I was excited to hear that he would direct his own movie. I thought that movie was long and boring. Only the music I thought was good in that. I did see the sequel anyway when it went on DVD and that sucked too.
