I was soooo sick in the first trimester of my pregnancies. The first was so bad I ended up spending three days in the hospital knocked out and getting fluids. The fourth was by far the worst though. I was so dehydrated from being ill that the pregnancy was in danger.

If it weren't for being pregnant in the first trimester I'd probably have at least six kids instead of four. Are there any other Moms who have experienced this?

I experienced morning sickness in exactly the opposite direction - with my first pregnancy, I was SICK........went to the hospital for dehydration, etc. The second pregnancy, I was sick but not nearly as badly as the first time. On my third pregnancy, I was very rarely ill at all!!!! (My third pregnancy, however, was the only one that went to term.)

I am certain that everyone's experience is different. But I can say that when I WAS sick, it was the worst nausea I have ever had in my entire life. I tried soda crackers, sipping tea, etc., etc., etc.,....nothing really ever worked.

Kitty I know exactly what you mean. It IS the worst nausea. It seemed like I couldn't breath without feeling really "ill".

I tried everything too. I'd try eating what the Dr. recommended and what books recommended but it finally came down to whatever my stomach wanted it what would stay with me. With the fourth pregnancy though I couldn't open a box of crackers by myself without getting sick. I simply could not fix anything, even drinks. If it hadn't been for my two older kids I'm sure I would have been in much worse shape than I was.

Being that sick is often made worse by family members and friends who have never experienced anything like it. I had one family member who kept telling me "to get over it" and most of the others just simply ignored the situation altogether. Out of all those people my daughter's best friend's Mom was the most helpful. They lived a few door's down and she came up to meet with cleaning ladies and sent me some homemade chicken noodle soup.

Awwww, Cheryl, you certainly had a treasure in that friend-neighbor who came up to help out!!!

My neighbors and I have several "soon-to-be" Moms in the group. They are all early in their 1st Trimester, so (in light of THIS discussion!) we started talking.

We are going to rotate babysitting their existing children when they are most ill and take turns fixing easy dinners to take to their homes. This way they don't have to cook!!! Hubbies are being enlisted to heat up and serve these dinners and the older children are going to clean up, etc. with a group member's help.

Hopefully this will give at least our neighbors some relief until they pass the "sickness" part of their pregnancy.......

Kitty that's wonderful!! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> That will be such a great help to them. It's awesome that you all are such fantastic neighbors. I've heard of groups who do that when the baby is born, but as someone who almost lost her fourth child because of "morning sickness", I'd say the first trimester is even more of a help.

Well, recently my husband woke up in extreme pain and could not move! (A disc in his back had blown, but we did not know it at the time) He was paralyzed and I called an ambulance. Terrified, horrified and scared beyond belief.

Before the first responders with the Fire Dept could get out of the ambulance, my neighbors were there beside me. One gathered up my 9-year-old son, the other checked all of our pets and asked for a spare key. And, the third neighbor GAVE me the keys to her car! (My car recently threw a rod and died. We only have a standard truck that I cannot drive.)

WOW!!! I have been blessed with a wonderful community and together we are going to keep our little corner of the Earth as happy and loving as we can!!! Woo Hoo!

I think that welcoming a baby is very important, but to help the Mom better survive the "yucky" sick part and enjoy the remainder of her pregnancy will bring us happy babies AND happy Moms! JMHO

Kitty I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. That must have been horribly frightening. It's wonderful that you had so much support from your neighbors. I've never lived in a community where the neigbors were that close but it sounds wonderful. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hey Kitty I said earlier in one of my posts that I almost lost my fourth child due to "morning sickness". I just wanted to make sure that it was very clear that it was NOT morning sickness that put my pregnancy in danger. A normal case of morning sickness will NOT endanger a pregnancy.

My nausea was of the severest form. I was getting ill 20-30 times a day. I had no help and became severely dehydrated. It was the dehydration that put the pregnancy in danger.

I would urge any pregnant mom who is experiencing such severe nausea to call her Dr. immediately. Make sure they are aware of it. My Dr. really was not aware of how sick I was until I called and said "I think I need help".

Point well taken, Cheryl!!! I also experienced an endangered pregnancy due to DEHYDRATION that was exacerbated by morning sickness. It was my first pregnancy and I thought I was being a "wimp" and I did not contact my doctor as I should have.

When I finally did contact my doctor, I was sent to emergency and hydrated - quickly!! It is always very important to keep in contact with your caregiver, physician, ob/gyn during your pregnancy. So what if you "think" you are a pest! That's what you (and/or your insurance company) pay them for! LOL.

Seriously, though no question is a bad one and all elements of your health are important to you and your baby! Thanks for pointing that out, Cheryl!

Well, I remember my first pregnancy and how I thought I was being a wimp too. With that one my husband kept calling the Dr. and they kept telling him everything was ok and not to worry. They didn't offer to see me or anything. At the time I wasn't aware of how concerned he was.

He finally called and demanded that they do something for me. They gave in and once they saw me I was sent straight to the hospital where they put me in a bed, gave me meds and liquids and I slept for three days straight. I remember waking up once and taking a bite out of my hubby's candy bar.

Needless to say, I found a new Dr. with my following pregnancies.

I just wanted to make sure that someone who is newly pregnant and came in to the forum and read that didn't get upset and concerned for mild morning sickness. I also wanted to make sure that someone who was as sick as we were knew that they needed to take it seriously. Dehydration can be a big deal in pregnancy.

I remember with the last one, they couldn't get an IV in because I so dehydrated my veins wouldn't hold up. After about the 8th poke I told the nurse, "forget it, I'm going home". She looked at me and told me "if you go home, you won't be pregnant tomorrow". I stayed three days with that one too until I was so homesick I didn't do anything but cry.
