I often hear remarks about those of us in favor of decriminalization of marijuana that we must be users ourselves, and perhaps we need to get a life. I have never abused drugs. I do not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes or use any illegal drugs. I tried cigarettes and alcohol years ago, I tried marijuana once, in my early years and couldn't figure out why anyone in their right mind would want to use any them. They are not my 'cup of tea.' I am a Mom and Grandmom, my only son died from a heroin overdose, and now I am a drug law reform activist who became enlightened about drug use and abuse only after my son's death. Those of you who think I am out of line, take the time to do the research I have done in the last 8 years, then and only then could you possibly understand that what you are saying is ridiculous and ignorant. If you haven't walked in my shoes, you cannot possibly have a clue about what I think. Marijuana use among the terminally ill, should never, ever be illegal. If it brings a patient any release from their misery why should you (or anyone else) care? It is proven to not be addictive, unlike the opiate drugs often prescribed for these patients. It is less problematic than alcohol and cigarettes. Even though some states have voted FOR medical marijuana, the federal government comes along and arrests people anyway. Do you honestly think this is right? What about States Rights? What about our rights to have custody of our own bodies? Should the federal government be so intrusive that it can tell us what we can and cannot do with our own bodies if we are of legal age? Legal age means adults, not children, of course.
