Wow, you have all stirred up so many memories here!

I recall not having central heating, only the pot belly stoves...and being sent to the dark cellar to get a bucket of coal!

Also, does anyone remember NOT having hot/cold water in the sink, or a big bathtub, and taking your bath in the round steel tub after heating water on the coal stove...a shower?...what was that?

Don't know about your town, but we had gambling on Polish Hill! I mean, playing the numbers!
It was my Babka's favorite pastime. She'd give me her list and the few pennies she played daily, and I took them to the candy store on the corner! It was a real celebration when she won just a couple dollars!

Frank. Yup the Organ Grinder with his little monkey. If you put some change in the cup, the monkey would perform a trick. Dee. I think your post about the round tub and no hot water may have been a little before my time but I know about the introduction of a stoker that made the chore of shoveling coal a lot easier.
Judith. I know about Alpena because my mother came from that area. I still have cousins in Posen and their family name is Samp.

Gone But Not Forgotten:
No company construction, no glaring lights, no golden arches. A simple sign in front of the small building saying "EATS", also known as a greasy spoon. Not home cooking but very good.

The Corner Drugstore:
Had a counter there and a "soda jerk" that could make any cold, sweet concoction that you named.

The local Hamburger joint:
Had a jukebox and you and your friends hung around there after school.

Driving along the highway:
Burma-Shave signs. Made a little witticism or saying.
Cushman Motor Scooters.

School:
Sadie Hawkens Dance.
Sock Hops.
The big bully in gym class. If you landed a good one in boxing you had a friend for life.
Kids comming to class on a Monday morning all bruised up and limbs in casts. Had a great toboggan party over the weekend.

Law and Order:
In School.
Mistake one.
You got paddled by Sister.... for doing something wrong. She used the board of education.
Mistake Two.
You went home and told your parents about it. Two spankings are better than one and it gets the point across.

On The Street.
The big policeman on foot beat in your neighborhood. You may have received a kick in the slats for doing something naughty but in the next second he was walking you across the street through dangerous traffic. If you needed help while away from home, this was the guy to look for.
