Hey Guys..........Lily here!

You guys are getting real nitty gritty - I LOVE IT, ..... each time I read something I forgot, I run over and tell my husband and we laugh......example.........how could I forget Saunders on Woodward or Vernors or New Era Potatoe chips - OR MAKING OUT ON THE BOB-LO BOAT.

THOSE WERE SUCH GREAT TIMES IN OUR LIVES.......WE DID`NT HAVE MUCH - BUT WE HAD EVERYTHING.

THAT`S WHAT IMPRESSED MY HUSBAND SO MUCH ABOUT OUR SEPT/OCT 2004 TRIP TO POLAND.....HE FELT SO AT HOME, ESPCIALLY IN THE BACK ROAD AREAS, LITTLE VILLAGES AND TOWNS..........THEY HAVE SO LITTLE AND YET THEY HAVE EVERYTHING......AND OF COURSE THE BIG TICKET ITEM.....THEY HAVE THEIR FAITH, THEIR WILL TO SURVIVE, AND EACH OTHER. GOD HOW I MISS THAT IN TODAY`S SOCIETY.

ANOTHER THING THAT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, IS THAT WHEN I WAS READING MANY OF YOUR MEMORIES, I WAS WRITING DOWN DATES AND WHAT I WAS DOING AT THAT TIME. IT WAS SO HURTFUL, SO VERY HURTFUL WHEN I KEPT READING THE DATES OF THE LATE 30`S AND EARLY 40`S TO ABOUT 1946 AND REALIZED HOW HORRIBLE IT WAS FOR PEOPLE IN POLAND AND THROUGHOUT EUROPE. AFTER HAVING VISITED AUSCHWITZ AND BIRKENHAUS JUST A COUPLE MONTHS BACK AND WALKING THE LONG WALK FROM FRONT TO BACK AND HEARING THE HORRIBLE STORIES..........I WONDERED TO MYSELF....`HOW WOULD THESE PEOPLE ANSWER THIS QUESTION.

WE ARE SO BLESSED.

GOD BLESS
lily

Frank. I remember the Polish grocer on the corner. That recall brought back a lot of memories. The meat was always rapped in brown paper with a string around the package. We were lucky enough to have a poulter on another corner that sold not only chickens but also sold ducks, geese and fresh eggs. Yup the chickens were checked as were the ducks and geese. The ducks were used to make Czarnina but the feathers of all birds were saved for pillows and pierzynas.
Iam now going to add a couple more memories that this dusty old memory has recalled.

Radio programs our mothers liked:
Don McNeil "The Breakfast Club" from Chicago.
"One Mans Family"
"Stella Dallas"

For the children:
"Sgt. Preston of the Yukon" On you huskies, mush. Fell flat when it was switched to TV.

The Whole Family:
"The Life of Riley" with William Bendix
"Baby Snooks"
"Fred Allen"

The Sunday Comics:
Maggie and Jiggs.

Lily we may not have had much when we were young (like you said in your post). The one thing we had and developed to a high degree was "imagination". A TV or movie cannot replace the pictures we paint in our own minds. When TV's were widely available, who had time for them? There was always something more interesting to do. :music: :music:

My Grandfather Jakub WAS a small grocer on the corner . . . in New Bedford, MA, and then in Chicopee, MA. He made his own kielbasa, but my mother used to talk about the candy and soda she got there after school. He died a couple of months before I was born, so I did not know him or the store, and have just one photo of it. The big house that he owned where my mother and her sibllings grew up has been torn down and now there is a car dealer there. Right next to the big Polish church (St. Stanislaus).

Hi Jaga and anyone else who is around. I am Judith and you asked me to tell you a bit about myself. So here it goes, I was raised in detroit, my parents family came from alpena. I went to nursing school in Michigan and eventually moved to California with friends, where I met my husband Joe. We have 3 children who work and live in silicon valley. We love being grandparents to our 6 little ones who call me Grambu. We now live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevedas often refered to as the gold country because gold was discovered here in 1849. On a personal note I am interested in almost everything and usually have an opinion on it all. I love to laugh, read, garden and work on art projects and spend time with family and friends. Currently I am working on my family tree on my Dads side whose last name was Gorski.
That is how I discovered this forum, looking for information. I am looking forward to visiting this site often, there seem to be good topics and people here. That is it in a nutshell.
I wish you all a great day !!! Judith
