Dear Frank,

It has brought to my heart from your post of your friend in Poland, very much pain and concern. The people close to the border speak good German, but, it is becoming more limited for a work visa in Germany for them.

Some years back, it was very common for Polish people to work in the harvest time. They would work through here into France and then Italy, then return to their homes.

I think, that emigration process of well educated people in Poland will intensify. Polish doctors have much skills, but are paid not very well. Avarage young doctor have a monthly pension about 500 USD. If swedish hospital offers him 2000 USD he will leave. On the other hand, blue collar workers are not flexible enough to leave Poland, and they do not speak any foregin language. Nobody abroad will hire them.
The whole situation makes polish youth to learn more.
Sometimes I also think, what am I doing here.. I finished management, have post graduated studies in accountancy and also in tax law, I am finishing my PhD, I have done a civil servant exam and they pay me 800 USD. But I will not leave. I like this place. This is where my home is..

You are to be commended to your loyalty to your country.. As usual I learn a lot from you.
800 usd for what you do,does not sound like much..But I am sure that it buys a lot more in Poland than in the US..There is an old saying. YESCZE POLSKA NIE ZGINUJE TAK DLUGO MY ZIJEMY

The fact is, that prices in Poland and in USA or rest of the wester world are pretty close. Of course there are some differences. But believe me, in Germany Snikcers or milk cost almost pretty much the same <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

the situation in Western part of Poland is a bit easier, the people here are much more connected to Germany and Western Europe by trade and by EU.

Lets hope that Malgosia will find something for herself especially since she speaks some foreign languages!

I am sorry to hear that she lost het job, I would encourage her to look for cooperations with Germany, it is closer than the USA, but the pottery business is also in Western part of Poland, so maybe somehow she would be able to continue it.

Hello to all, this is my first time to write in to this chat. I am a Polish american grandmother who grew up in Detroit. I have started doing research on my Polish roots and discovered this heading. I am enjoying the conversation from Poland and like others wish there was a way to help. After reading about the Polish soldiers in Iraq i sent packages. Is there any way wa can do things like that for the peopl;e in Poland?? Judith

I grew up in Pennsylvania, but do have many relatives that moved years ago to the Detroit area where there was more work. I am also now researching my family's history, and recommend you read Nancy's geneology articles on the Polish Culture site. Also, the book "Polish Roots" is a big help.

As for your question about helping the people in Poland, I really can't answer that, but perhaps someone else here on the forum will have some ideas. Just stay with us, and keep checking.
