Dear Frank,

If you are a religious person, such as my self. We may only trust in God and his word, for non other. If we love him (The Lord) and obey his commandants and thank him for our life. You, my self and others, have not to be concerned, for he will take care of us.

By chance you have studied Geology, then you know the earth changes self and destroyes self on a regular basis. In other words, new rock is formed from the enterier, extruded upon the surface, and through the process of reclamation, through folding, old surface is returned to enterier to be reconstituted before returning to the surface through the magma process and once reaching the surface again, it is now called lava, once cooled, it is then basalt (means fire formed rock).

And so our earth, it will end as we know it, who will know what then...

In as much as we as people to destroy the earth, well, it is not my opinion, only an observation. Nature has in harness, more power then we as people, will ever dream or concieve. For example: one volcano. We as man, have not ever built or even concieved the energy and explosives to duplicate just one volcano, let alone, to process rock into molten magma or lava on such a scale. Just think of the multitude of active and semi active volcanoes just on the belt alone.

I have no url for show and tell, just only plain talk of a plain subject on a complicated topic.

I only trust that other people will not be offended by my religious referance. But, as a side noten. How many times have you heard and read of the efferts to seporate God out of our lives and regulate his word to be only on Sunday. Then, when a disaster occures of a large magnitude, we hear some exclaim: Why did God allow this to happen?

Just some thoughts from a barbarian

Independance day started great but then it went some rediculous Holywood phantasy way in which some
American fighter jets destroyed that huge alien vessels.
It was not realistic to me.
But the tention of those gigant alien starships above New York and Los Angeles was done well, I think.
I hope that I am talking about the right movie.

Karl,

What is a littlebit disappointing to me is the fact that foreign movies are always spoken in German language. So when you see a typical French actress you hear a german lady speaking in Voice over and
an Englsih gentleman has a German fake accent.
So I never watch movies on German television or in German cinemas. I am used to the original languages and subtitles. A language also makes the atmosphere.
A nice game of friends of mine was to turn of the sound and invent words and sentances ourselves in German.
We had great joy in doing that during our student time.
So in German fake American, French and Italian accents. "James, wass machts du jetzt", and etc.

I think that the movies I mentioned were "Viehjud Levi"

Karl,

Comming week starts on the Duch cultural broadcast cooperation VPRO on "Nederland 3" (The third public chanal) the third serie of Edgard Reitz, Heimat 3.
I will enjoy watching it again. I saw Heimat 1 and Heimat 2 too. It was interesting for me to learn about the recent German history from these movies.
Excellent acting, atmosphere, the subtle switching form balck & white to colorfilm, and the themes.
The new series start with the fall of the Berlin wall, the
"Wiedervereinigung".

Hi Pieter,

Thank you so very much for the information. I had watched the serios of Heimat 1, I think that is correct. It was the love of Otto to Maria then through his death from a bomb explosion to the growing up of her/his child children, to her death and reuniting with her friends and family, then again with Otto.

I must say, once started on watching it, I was just unable to not continue the serios. Please do not be irritated dear friend, but, to recall in film, the old days, was very depressing to me, I felt my heart was being pulled out, and I would begine to miss my father.

I will of course, watch the new serios...

Thought perhaps the above url may be of interest to you.

you had asked me of another film some time in past, do you remember which film it was? I am not sure if I answered your post, and it disturbs me.

So what is HEIMAT? Nothing less than the story of 20th century German history, told through the experiences of a small village, and one family in particular. But this is not a weighty history lesson. Every major event takes place off-screen - we experience their repercussions on a people remote from them in terms of time and space. The saga is a satisfying feast on the level of a novel-sequence by Powell or Proust - a varied dramatis personae, precise detail, anecdote, incident, communities, generation struggles, local and national crises, social comedy (I hadn't remembered how funny it was), domestic and national tragedy; each episode is packed with these, building up accumalitively a quiet, yet inexorable, power.
Well said in the link of yours.
It was long ago Heimat 1, but it reminded me of stories of old memories and stories from Germans in "Zeugen des Zwantzigsten jahrhundert". Lately I saw former Bundes Kanzler Helmut Schmitt. And I saw Hitlers secretarry. And people who survived the Feursturm of Hamburg (like Duch survived the bombing of Warsaw,
Rotterdam and Arnhem). Documentries, other German movies, essays in German newspapers and magazines
(FAZ and der Spiegel).

I can understand that the series was addictive to you,
because it caught me to and kept me to the last one.
The Generationconflict and the social-cultural and political tension of the "Zweite Heimat" caught me even more, because it was closer to where my life started.
De studentmovement in Berlin/Paris of 1968, the cold war, the assasination of pres. Kennedy, the hippie and drugs era, sexual and feminist revolution, New Left
and finally the Bader Meinhoff gruppe mixed with the classical music scene of Music students in Mnchen.
There is such clarity, atmosphere, Zeitgeist and talent in these series that it keeps your attention.
I am not irritated dear that you miss your father father,
because that is a natural feeling for a son who loses his father on an early age.

Dear Pieter,

I must confess to being so late in a response to you and your wonderfull manner of post. Even though of the past of the National Sociolisium party. My hate for what they did to my country and my future still maintains a tast of steel withen my mouth. It is a strange manner of discription, but, very close and accurate.

I am very gratefull for your sensitive manner of description of a subject that still today is some what a bit sensitive.

You know Pieter, even after all these years, even with my SAAF service, then completion of my civil service here. The year of 1945 still remains a low point of my life. Ever after ward, it seems as a living ghost. But, of course this is just emagination and very wrong.

It is a curse though to look so very closely to the web of a spider, before long, while examining what we may have missed, we are then caught up withen the web with out escape.

Brunnen...just one question, why does God seem to allow these disasters on poor thirld world countries? It never fails, almost every tremendous natural disaster seems to happen to the poorest countries. It seems like a cruel little trick!
