The doctor would scream no matter what the family history would be!

If a full meltdown had occurred at Chernobyl, I'm not sure anyone really knows just how disastrous it would have been. However, distruction on a massive scale would have been possible.

The nuclear core is sealed by a concrete sarcophagus which was constructed right after the explosion. However, it is being bombarded constantly by heavy amounts of radiation from inside, and so it requires maintenance. Unfortunately, since the end of the USSR, Ukraine has lacked the proper funding.

The heavily contaminated areas right around the reactor will be unsuitable for life for many hundreds, even thousands of years.

Eric, each MD reacts differently. The patient with a family history of cancer should be relatively easy to convince while others may require more finesse. I'm referring to the MD's style, not content. Carl

Today's State of "Shelter" Object at Chernobyl NPP Does Not
Give Time for Reflections - Scientists

The scientific council of the Academy of Building of Ukraine,
the Engineer Academy of Ukraine and the section of nuclear
power of the Ministry of Fuel and Energy consider that the
current condition of "Shelter" object at the Chernobyl NPP
does not give time for reflections - building constructions
are unstable and the risk of emergencies is rather high. UNIAN
has been reported about it at the informational service of
"Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant" state-owned enterprise.

Such an opinion has been expressed in the course of a joint
session of the Academy of Building of Ukraine, the Engineer
Academy of Ukraine and the section of nuclear power of the
Ministry of Fuel and Energy in Kyiv on March 22.

Chairman of the session, deputy Fuel-Energy Minister Mykola
Shteinberg has underscored the Ministry and CNPP are carrying
out consultations on the conceptual draft of a new secure
confinement with different scientific organizations and
publicity, in order to receive maximal recommendations for
their implementation in the process of drafts making. They
have already received a number of such recommendations at the
session of the National Commission for Radiation Defense on
March 12, and in the network of preparing and carrying out of
public hearing, which took place in Slavutych on March 20.

Eric,

I understand that it happened in Ukraine but in that time Ukraine was a part of Soviet Union -just aws you stated everything was sometimes called "Russia" which happened in Soviet Union.

These people who still live in the dangerous zone - do they have any electricity? I doubt. It reminds me a situation of these people who decided not to leave the towns in Northern Siberia - where all the infrastructure was torned down.

Do you know that for some short time in the history Tchernobyl belonged to Poland? But Poles was never a majority there <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Yes, people have returned to the contaminated zone, which is supposed to be off-limits to people. Since it is supposed to be a closed zone, there is really nothing - all utilities have been shut off. So they are isolated from the world in many different ways. No one can contact them, they can't contact the outside, and it's very unlikely they'll be getting too many visitors.

As the woman on the bike said, even cell phones don't operate in this zone, because no one has put in transmitters.

Thank You for this very informative link on this lady that takes such a great risk in her life to
visit Chernobyl. Both my husband and myself found it very interesting.
