Hi there. I went into this nose piercing thing wihtout knowing the proper way to get it done guess and have been having all sorts of problems. First, I love my nose piercing and I hope to keep it. BUT- I had it done about 2 months ago and it still hasnt healed. It was done by an ear piercing gun, I didnt know that was bad. Next, I have a lump on the inside and out but it dosnt really hurt. I was told after a week or two of cleaning it I could change the nose pins at any time, so i have a bunch I have been changing daily to suit my mood. I have completely no idea what they are made of.
So, I ask you, what do I do now? I want to get rid of this lump, it pushes my nose pin out and I think it looks weird although I am sure no one else can tell.
I tried to put a ring in, but couldnt, and have to put fairly big pins in to cover the lump. Oh by the way, it is above my right nostril.
Help please. Jacqueline

Jacqueline,

What you have bump-wise is the classic buildup of scar tissue known as keloids. The blunt method of having your nose done with a gun results in this for a lot of folks.

As you got your nose done with a gun, it's pretty clear the person who did has not been educated about nose piercing and healing time. Eight weeks is about the shortest time it can take to heal a nose and if you are changing your nose rings daily wearing *whatever* metals there is a very strong chance that this is irritating the piercing and preventing it from healing. Really with noses, you should put in either surgical steel or 24g gold and then leave it alone for a few months.

Read the articles on nose piercing and the letters from the mail bag on noses and you'll hear a lot of the same. Tea tree oil can get rid of those keloids but it may take weeks to months for it to work, but it does work.

Hi Rae, thanks so much for your answers. I just didnt know what to do. I have a nose pin in their now, I dont even know what its made of,considering it was only a few bucks I am sure it is not too great of a pin, but from just leaving it alone and cleaning it with saline solution, I think it is getting better. Thanks to you, now I know it will take quite a while to heal, and hopefully it will end up as if I had had it done the right way. What signs do I look for to know that it is in fact healing? For example, will the bump on the outside go away? One of the bumps on the inside has, and there is no pain. Talk to ya soon, Jackie M.

Hi- Ok, whoever pierced your nose needs to be scolded...lol

I'm a body piercer and have been piercing for about 5 years. Jacqueline, you might consider letting that pierce close up. If you are still having any probs with it- especially if you are having ANY leakage, go to the doc, and let that hole close. Nose piercings can cause death if infected. Not trying to scare you- Just saying it's nothing to play around with. That lump might also be infection- Keloiding, prolly- could be an infection in there too. But you don't want to just 'take it out' as it gives the infection room to roam further... pls go to a doctor if your still having problems. You can always get your nose re-pierced (by a proffessional (!!!) after it heals.)

For those of you worrying about infections and keloids, an infection is typically characterized by steadily or rapidly increasing redness and swelling, extreme tenderness and most often some sort of discharge. Keloids are more often the color of the rest of your skin, stay much more localized to the piercing and form more slowly.

Forming a keloid or scar tissue is more common for persons of color, African-Americans and people of Asian descent. In fact in Africa, the whole art for of scarification was based on the fact that black marks don't show on very dark-skinned people, but the scars formed were both lighter and raised.

I would like to add here that the main reason for not using a piercing gun is that they are not designed to be sterlized properly and therefore are potentially able to transmit blood-born diseases such as hepatitis and HIV.

And then there's the blunt studs that fit to tight to the nose.... which tend to result in all the keloids and other stuff we've been talking about....

thats they only way the pircing place pirced the nose was with a gun,

i went there last week and they have only just started to use the neadle for it

but they charge extra to have it pirced with a neadle witch is stupid since it should be done with a neadle anyway

OH WHAT ABOUT THIS THEN
-MY STEP MUM WENT TO HAVE HER NOSE PIRCED AT THE SAME PLACE I DID COS SHE LIKED THE LOOK OF MINE,

BUT THEY GOT THE GUN STUCK IN HER NOSE WHEN THEY PIRSED IT (THE GUN HAD APPERENTLY LOCKED STUCK)...

THE PIRSER STARTED YANKING THE GUN TRYING TO GET IT OUT (i was standing there in shock)

THE PIRSER TWISTED THE GUN SIDEWAYS AND PULLED IT AS THE STUD CAME OUT AS WELL

MY STEP MUM LOOKED LIKE SHE WAS GOING TO CRY AS BLOOD PORED FROM THE HOLE IN HER NOSE

MY STEP MUM SAID LEAVE IT IM GONNA GO-BUT THE PIRSER SAID IT DONT MATTER AND PICKED THE STUD UP AND SHOVED IN BACK IN PIRSEING A BLOOMING SECOND HOLE

WHEN ME AND MY STEP MUM LEFT HER NOSE WAS STILL BLEEDING AND LOOKED PAINFULLY SWOLLEN -SHE HAD TO TAKE IT OUT THE NEXT DAY AND IT WAS PAINFULL,

WHEN WE WENT BACK TO COMPLAIN THEY SAID IT WASNT THERE FAULT THE GUN GOT STUCK AND SAID SHE CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE OF THE FORM SHE SIGHNED BEFORE SHE HAD IT DONE SAYING THE PIRSER CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE OF ANYTHING GONE WRONG"

WE WAS SO FURIUS
I SUPPOSE THATS ONE WAY WHY THE GUN SHOULD BE BANNED FROM PIRSING ANY OTHER THAN THE EARS

Guess what? That's what disclaimers are for.... You can try filing a claim with the health department, or find out if there is a professional piercers organization in the UK. (I see you are in London)

Piercing guns shouldn't even be used for ears, as I said above as they cannot be sterilized properly.

If you don't educate yourself before having ANY bodily procedure done (medical, cosmetic, whatever) you run the risk of having an experience that does not go well or is not what you expect. Read up ahead of time for yourself, ask questions of the person you are going to have the piercing done by.
