When August comes around, the best sky show of the year is also on its way. The Perseids are an annual meteor shower. What's it all about and how can you see it?

If you missed the Perseids last night, there's still time! The 12th & 13th should also have good viewing. The best viewing is midnight til just before dawn. However you might see some from 10 PM onwards if it's dark enough.

Note: You can see Perseids til the end of the month, but there won't be so many. And, of course, there could be a longer wait to see one.

Perseid meteor at the peak

EarthSky
Quote
View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Roland Kueng in Wolfhausen, Zurich, Switzerland, captured this colorful Perseid on August 13. And see the little galaxy nearby? It’s the large spiral galaxy next door to our Milky Way, called the Andromeda galaxy. Roland wrote: “Waiting long time to get a reasonably nice Perseid meteor, together with Milky Way and neighbor galaxy Andromeda. I used 20-second exposition time with 4-second interval.”

More Perseids from EarthSky, if you're interested.

The Perseids are finished for this year. But there are still the Geminids to come in December. They last from Dec 4 to Dec 20, with the peak is 14-15 December.

Imagine the scene: a starry night in mid-December. As your eyes begin to adjust to the darkness, you start to see movement in the sky. At some point you definitely see a shooting star – properly called a meteor. Welcome to what many people think is the year's best meteor shower, the Geminids.
