To Lisa, Target practice twice a week?If this is taking care of a child,
my mother must have been a saint.
loong She shot at a target range for sport. To many people, that is no different than shooting a bow and arrow at a bulls-eye for sport, something many other people do, and that as you probably know some in Japan practice as an intense form of mindfulness practice. So far they have found no evidence that she ever took him along. From what the detectives have revealed, they have been trying to find proof that he had been practicing at a shooting range in recent months, and have not found any yet. So we really don't know. What has been reported is that she homeschooled him, lived with him, and spent most of her time caring for him. Whether she did a 'good' or 'bad' job is not something any of us have enough knowledge about yet. I will say as a parent that much of time you aren't sure if you are doing a 'good' or 'bad' job, you just make the decisions that seem best at the time. We do know she was dealing with an adult son with a lot of problems, so her choices were not easy. I'm not trying to defend her, or to defend the gun culture of the U.S. I think my main point is that we don't really know enough to judge the mother. I think it's wiser to take a 'don't judge unless you have walked in someone's shoes' perspective in a case like this. To me, from a spiritual perspective, judging others is a mental pattern that we all fall into much too easily. And in this case, where there is so little validated information available so far, so this is doubly so. Maybe as more information emerges, we can get a clearer picture. As for the Columbine movie, yes I have seen it, and no not much has changed. So I do think as a society we have a lot of issues with guns, and with the media as I said above, that contributed to this and need to be addressed.

To all or none,
Imagine a young 22 year old with a glock 9mm,in a holster.
All attacks on schools were with Assault weapons that can shoot through a wall 6" thick.
Many teachers ,I beleive would not be able to shoot another human being.
The first precepts in any religions, phylosophy is Thou shall not kill.
Compassion brings compassion,Peace brings Peace.Guns bring guns.
A peaceful man loong son of the Universe

To Lisa ,
In one of your post you mentionned the Noble Art of Archery in Japanese forms of concentration. These bows are 7 feet high arrors are 48 " long.
The whole process is to follow a system of moves, breathing, preparation for the pulling of the string, and then the apotheosis Release.Thefollow through is as important as the rest.Touching or not the target is meaningless. It is The Discipline. Pretty hard exercise. At the beginning you think of all the moves breaking your concentration. If you could see a Master, shoot, you you would be amazed,
loong.

Hi Loong, yes this is very similar to martial arts. I don't know if it has come up here before, but I studied karate for many years - a Japanese style, Shotokan. It is very similar. The mental training and control, and mindfulness, is really the core of the practice, along with the ethical training.

To all or none.
The other day,I was reading a text relating of an encounter, with
Buddha and a farmer ,plowing his fields. What Buddha saw that
evertime, the ground would open up from the plowing ,on each side
lay half worms! So not killing is almost impossible.However.
Volontary non killing is doableand necessary.
loong
