The subject is The Rape of Europa, and while it is hard to tell from such a small picture, it looks like Titian to me. I had to look up his dates because I thought he was later than that, but he was painting around then.
Lucky you, to have been to the Gardner museum! I am near Boston every summer, but have such an aversion to cities that I never can bring myself to go in to see it. I had to be in Washington DC last month and had a free afternoon that I planned to spend at the National Gallery. Unfortunately that was the weekend of the big snowstorm and all of the museums were closed. Too bad, I may never get another chance like that!
Claybird, Boston is a great city. I worked there for 20 years. It's really not that scary. It's easy enough to take the subway to the MFA and the Gardner Museum is nearby.
I would highly recommend the trip into the city if you can make it next time. Driving is a bit crazy because of the one way streets and parking restrictions. Make a day of it!

Oh shoot. I was going to say Titan! LOL I was comparing that picture to others of his but went with Della'Abate instead. (Should've went with my first instinct!) LOl Good one!
