Between May and July 2012 the Olympic Torch will travel the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. The Olympic Flame will be carried by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers who have been nominated by the public, and will pass within 10 miles of 95% of the UK's residents.
I really like your article, Asha. The Torchbearers hold a great place of honor in the Olympic Games. I can imagine the humbleness, yet pride, they must feel.

Thank you Phyllis. The Torchbearer places have gone to a lot of people who have done amazing things in their daily lives who wouldn't necessarily think of themselves as special or different.
I found it fascinating researching the article to learn more about the origins of the Torchbearing tradition. I've always been aware of how sport can cross boundaries (though it can also be used as a political tool), but hadn't fully appreciated that for the ancient Greeks there was an amnesty on conflict for the duration of the Games.
