People with Down syndrome elevate the quality of life and richness of experience we enjoy at home, in our schools and communities. Families of babies and young children are especially struck by the inappropriate connotations the word 'down' has in describing babies, children or adults with DS.

I am including the link, in case your readers want to read about People First language. Also, please feel free to link to the article whenever you might want to do so.

I agree. "Down" Syndrome seems inappropriate because all of the Downs patients I've known and witnessed are anything but "down"! They are so cheery and positive. What joy they bring to this earth!

I know that it is quite startling when a teen or older adult with Down syndrome shows significant changes in mood or behavior - even those who have expressed the full range of human emotions with a healthy dose of the negative when they were younger. It seems especially disheartening when services and supports are not available for diagnosis and treatment of emotional challenges when they are experienced, and few resources for counseling.

That they are capable of contributing joy and creating a more positive atmosphere has helped create awareness and opportunities for them to live satisfying lives in their communities.
