* Do you feel that brothers and sisters have a unique bond?
* Has your relationship strengthened over the years?
* Would you drop everything to help them?
* How much does culture play a part?

It's funny that I ran across this post just now. I've always felt that my sisters and I share a close bond. But lately, it seems that a lot of past, unresolved hurts are surfacing.

Of course, I'd drop everything to help them. And I can get over those past hurts because I realize they are rooted in some personal insecurity or weakness on my part. And any of their intended or unintended hurtful inflictions are rooted in their own insecurities or weaknesses, too. We're all human, and we're all allowed to be human.

We're all so different and don't have similar interests or personalities or lifestyles at all. But we do share a common family. And that means everything. So I do my best to hold onto the love. It's there.

Hi Lori, you are so right. That bond remains through thick and thin. As it is Rakhi today, I wish you and all 'brothers and sisters' a wonderful day! (JOY)

A lovely article Joy - thank you. It made me think about my relationships wiht my siblings.

In the Western world, with family units often shifting and changing, children may be half brothers/sisters or step brothers/sisters. The times they come together may be when they are young or may be when they have taken their first steps towards maturity. It may be that new family structures are created when children have become adults. Would Rakhi treat all such relationships as equal?

Hi Asha, many thanks for your feedback on the article!

In answer to your query, yes, Rakhi would bring together step brothers and step sisters in the same way. In essence, it is about celebrating that connection. In olden days this extended to people who were not necessarily related by blood, e.g., if a woman tied a Rakhi thread onto the wrist of a man she felt totally safe with, it became his duty to protect her forever. Its the season of love again this month (August) with the festival of Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi) or Bhai Phota which celebrates the Unconditional Bond of Love between brothers and sisters. This article reveals more about the significance of the Thread of Love that you tie around your sibling's wrist:
