If you are looking for a last name that fits his profession, you could call him something like 'Wallace Snoops'.
If you are looking for a last name that would not make him stand out in the crowd or betray his profession, you could call him something like 'Wallace Brandenburg' (this county is overloaded with Brandenburgs).
If you are looking for an unusual last name, you could call him 'Wallace Wolfinburger' or 'Wallace Binion' (my last name is rather unusual and no one seems to be able to figure out how to spell it).

Thanks for the ideas Lisa. Actually I like Wallace Binion. I'm looking for a name that makes the reader think 'detective' withoutt being too obvious.

Cool. I kind of like the thought of my unusual last name being used in a detective story.

My husband just filled me in a little on the Binion name. So you know, there is a Binion's Casino in Las Vegas. The Binion who originally owned it was murdered years ago in what appeared to be a mob execution. I don't believe that we are related to that branch of the Binions. At least I hope we aren't. Apparently there is a lot of history behind my last name.

Thank you Vance. Now I have several names to consider.
Lisa, The Binion name certainly has the mysterious history that I'm looking for in my character.

The name Wallace comes from a Scottish surname that meant 'Welsh or foreigner' in Norman French. First used as a given surname by Sir William Wallace as an honor in the 13th century.
Binion is an old Welsh name meaning anvil. First recorded use David Abeinon, dated 1313.
I love finding out the meaning of names Lynne, its a hobby of mine, so just had to go for it.
Wallace Binion gets my vote.

Just the name alone, Wallace Binion, sounds like an intriguing character. It has a nice ring to it and rolls off smoothly, making it easy for the reader to pronounce. You will also have the option of providing some history to the name to further intrigue your readers and give 'Wallace' something to ponder about when he is away from the tensions and stress of his job.
