I did not know where to post this, so here it is.

I am Hispanic American and my husband is also. We have accumulated enough money to do something we have been dreaming about for a while.

We would like to buy a few acres of land in a place that is warm all year around, but which also gets plenty of rainfall.

You see, we want to go off the grid and live a self sustainable life complete with solar energy and what not.

but we have a major concern. We do not want to go live in some area where we might become victims racism. So, what I would like to find out from members is any suggestions where we might settle with some acreage and live peacefully as Hispanic Americans?

We figure if we could be beyond walking distance from the nearest big town, that would be great in case of civil unrest, etc.

Any ideas welcome.

I think the towns around tuscon, AZ, would be a good place to start. The entire swatch of southern AZ. Also the lower swatch of california. I can't speak for new mexico or west texas, but those might be copacetic too.

I'd love to hear more about your plans. I am almost off the grid now, myself, and I talk about my homesteading projects in the frugal living forum. I'd love to hear about your experiences there!

Hello Runemaster!

Ah, to live off the grid . . it is a dream that I share (but probably not too likely). I would recommend Central and South Texas. There is a sizable Hispanic population and a strong history of Latino political power. Right now property is very reasonable (with the exception of South Austin).

Alternatively, you might look into Northeastern New Mexico (Las Vegas area). It is quite rural, the climate is mild and property is reasonable (avoid getting too close to Santa Fe or Taos).

I'll disagree with Jill regarding Arizona. Not only does the state have terrible policies vis a vis Hispanics, but it is too hot and there's not enough water.

One place that I'm loving these days is Arkansas, especially near Rogers and Fayetteville. There's a growing Hispanic population and land is pretty cheap. The area is beautiful and the people are quite nice.

Good luck in your search.
