Nanticoke (Piscataway-Conoy), Powhaten (Accohannock), Lenape (Delaware), Susquehannock, and Ohio Valley (Shawnee) were all tribes in Maryland. The only tribe and community still in Maryland is Piscataway-Conoy, located in Southern Maryland.

When you say that the Piscataway-Conoy is the only ones still around, have the others died out or moved away?

Both. wink Native-American.org says "Most Native Americans were forced to leave Maryland during the 1700's, when eastern tribes were being displaced by colonial expansion. These tribes are not extinct, but except for the descendants of Maryland Native Americans who hid or assimilated into white society, they do not live in Maryland anymore. Some tribes that once were native to Maryland ended up on Indian reservations in Oklahoma. Other Maryland Indians became refugees and joined larger tribes, where their descendants still live today".

There are no federally recognized Indian tribes in Maryland today, but that being said, there ARE still communities that live in southern Maryland that are recognized by the state. Non-recognized Indian tribes and communities in Maryland include: Piscataway-Conoy Confederacy: P.O. Box 1484 La Plata, Maryland 20646

The culture and language was Algonquin (or Algonkian) which covered all the tribes in this region. smile

Thanks. If you can think of anymore don't hesitate to list them.
