Has your child been assigned a family tree project in the past?

Did you make any changes or additions to the typical family tree?

With so many different types of families formed through relative adoption, foster care, domestic and international adoption, I thought it'd be fun to talk about different ways to complete the family tree project. This could be for school or just for fun.

What types of family tree projects did you or will you be making with your kids?

That could be a lot of fun. Pictures of special people in one's life, stories about those special people. We often think of a family tree as the line of descent but today there are many people who make more of an impact on our lives than parents and the other immediate families. When my daughter was in school, she put together a montage of family but extended family and other significant people would work very well.

Keep me posted.

Hi Angie!

I love the idea of including significant, non related people in the family tree.

I'm happy to see many schools changing the way they do this common project. I think it's great when teachers make the family tree project with your point in mind.

It helps so much to talk about all of the different types of families, and all of the different types of family trees out there.

One teacher I know created a family forest project. The child's tree was in the middle of the page. Each child could include as many additional trees as they wanted, with each tree representing someone special or important to the child.

One child even included Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, lol!
