Obesity is a problem of epidemic proportions in America. Should Christians be concerned? Is it a sin for a Christian to over-eat?

Obesity - A Christian Concern ?

Gluttony is mentioned in Proverbs. However, not all obesity is gluttony. There are many reasons for overweight. I lost 180 pounds so I'm sure not judging anybody. And I didn't diet per se to lose it -- I did the gastric bypass.

I've never tied obesity in with religion. I don't know that I would start now... This is a....different approach...

I find that most religions use themes to exclude and make people feel bad about themselves. Obesity when tied to the Christian religion is obviously a sin, because I'm sure it is seen as Glutony. This, I see, again is a way to make people who have a problem with weight feel guilty as a Christian.

Steven, religions don't make people feel bad about themselves. People with the wrong view of religion make people feel bad about themselves.

Knowing what the Bible really says and what Christ is all about is freeing and shows people their real worth.

Christian Living involves every aspect of life because God is concerned with every part of life. The Bible has instruction for everything in life. It is God's instruction book. It doesn't have anything to do with making people feel bad. It has to do with living the full life that God plans for each of us.

So while I'm still not of the mind frame to link obesity and religion...

Those are good suggestions at the end of the article though there are some times that it may take more than joining a gym. If I'm not mistaken hypothyriodism can also cause weight gain to a degree, just as hyperthyroidism can cause weight loss...so I would also suggest starting off with a doctor to see if there is a medical condition. If people are eating for psychological reasons - it also may take a bit more.

I do think for those that are religious, they can seek counseling in a church to see if there are more deep rooted issues... But I'm sure if the church approached them that they're obese and tying in obesity and gluttony - I think that would also cause an offense...true or not.

I am curious as to what can be defined as the "wrong view of religion".

Wrong view of religion is probably not the best term. Those who use their own religious views and Bible verses taken out of context to beat others over the head have a wrong understanding of their faith.

Lynne, You're right, that does happen A LOT.

I've seen it done a lot and most times not for the good or along the lines of being a false prophet and taking it out of context to suit the needs in their message. Those are the ones that use it to hurt and destroy people, beat people over the head. You said it a lot nicer :-)
But anyway that's a whole other discussion. :-)

it is a sin only if you eat more even if you know that your tummy is full. or you ordered a lot then after eating you have many wastes
